Cornel Wilde - The Naked Prey (1966)

Synopsis
Glamorous leading man turned idiosyncratic auteur Cornel Wilde created in the sixties and seventies a handful of gritty, violent explorations of the nature of man, none more memorable than The Naked Prey. In the early nineteenth century, after an ivory-hunting safari offends an African tribe, the colonialists are captured and hideously tortured. Only Wilde's marksman is released, without clothes or weapons, to be hunted for sport, and he embarks on a harrowing journey through savanna and jungle, back to a primitive state. Distinguished by vivid widescreen camera work and the unflinching depiction of savagery, The Naked Prey is both a propulsive, stripped-to-the-bone narrative and a meditation on the notion of civilization.

Bourvil - Bourvil, bien... si bien (1947-1969) (2006)

André Raimbourg, dit Bourvil, puisait son énergie et sa raison d'être dans le bonheur zygomatique qu'il procurait à ses contemporains, le tout dans la gentillesse et la modestie. Olivier Ducastel & Jacques Martineau - Crustacés et coquillages aka Cockles and Muscles (2005)

PLOT:
For summer vacation, Marc and Béatrix take their two kids to the seaside house of Marc's youth, where their daughter takes up with a biker and their sons roams the beach with his best friend, who is in love with him. Things get steamier when Béatrix's lover Mathieu shows up, and Marc's old flame appears.

Just plain fun. This French semi-farce lends a fresh Mediterranean breeze to the gay film genre. Sexuality issues are discussed with tongue-in-cheek simplicity. Tolerance vs. intolerance. Yet the complexity of human sexual desires is well illustrated in colorful situations and funny plot twists. I believe the French can do a movie like this one well, while Americans would simply fall into a deep trench of camp. Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, who plays the mother of the central family, plays a real character with depth and range of feeling, despite her periodic flights into goofy simplicity. Gilbert Melki, who plays the father, handles his layered character well, with minor camp slippage along the way. American audiences might have some discomfort with age issues in the film, but that has more to do with American ageism and Puritanism than any flaw in this film. Jean-Marc Barr puts in a good performance as the ultimate dream butch daddy, French style. Fun, lite and yet worthwhile. Old Europe still has much to teach Americans about making movies.

Serge Gainsbourg - Le cinema de Serge Gainsbourg (3-CD Boxset) (2001)

There is a lot of music over these 3 discs and it really is essential for those who want to dig a little deeper into Serge's fascinating career, since basically none of the soundtracks he contributed to are available as reissues (with the exception of Cannabis/Ce Sacre Grand-Pere, Je T'Aime,Anna.....and the way out of print Japanese only issue of Madame Claude, which is extremely hard to track down, and outrageously expensive if you do happen to find a copy). There are some less than great tracks on here and, given that most of the tracks are instrumental, it sometimes does feel like a very long, disjointed soundtrack. The selections from the available soundtracks are terrific choices, I was particularly happy that the brilliant title track from Ce Sacre Grand-Pere is included. It's really a beautiful track, though I suspect that Gainsbourg was not the main contributor to it (this is a collaboration with Michel Simon and Michel Colombier). There are a plenty of gems scattered across the discs, too many to mention, though some notable ones are the version of Strip-Tease performed by Nico, which turns out to be better than the Juliette Greco version (also included), the two Anna Karina bonus tracks, Woom Woom Woom, Breakdown Suite, Comment Trouvez-Vous Ma Soeur, Lamour En Prive (featuring Francoise Hardy) and many others that I can't think of at the moment. The first disc is probably the best in terms of consistency, since it is taken from Serge's early jazz period and all of the cuts are very solid. The second disc is a bit more haphazard, though more adventurous and the third disc is, to be honest, pretty patchy, as it moves over the second half into Serge's more dubious 80's work. All in all though, a great set, very nicely boxed too with great liner notes and interviews. A must for Gainsbourg fans.

Jean-Luc Godard - Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux aka My Life to Live (1962)

Godard. We all went to Jean-Luc Godard in the 1960s. We stood in the rain outside the Three Penny Cinema, waiting for the next showing of "Weekend." One year the New York Film Festival showed two of his movies, or was it three? One year at the Toronto festival Godard said, "The cinema is not the station. The cinema is the train." Or perhaps it was the other way around. We nodded. We loved his films. As much as we talked about Tarantino after "Pulp Fiction," we talked about Godard in those days. I remember a sentence that became part of my repertory: "His camera rotates 360 degrees, twice, and then stops and moves back in the other direction just a little_to show that it knows what it's doing!"

And now the name Godard inspires a blank face from most filmgoers. Subtitled films are out. Art films are out. Self-conscious films are out. Films that test the edges of the cinema are out. Now it is all about the mass audience: It must be congratulated for its narrow tastes, and catered to. And yet, idly watching television as Aerosmith is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I reflect that if they can be resurrected from the ashes of more radical decades, then why not Godard?

I originally think to choose "Breathless" (1959), which fired an opening salvo of the French New Wave, had us all talking about "jump cuts," and made Jean-Paul Belmondo a star. But there is a new DVD of "My Life to Live" ("Vivre Sa Vie"), from 1963. I slip it into the machine, and within five minutes I am so fascinated that I do not move, I do not stir, until it is over. This is a great movie, and I am not surprised to find Susan Sontag describing it as "one of the most extraordinary, beautiful, and original works of art that I know of."

Famous shots. She smokes while a client embraces her, looking over his shoulder, eyes empty. Later Raoul inhales and kisses her, and she blows out his smoke. What is there to do in this Paris but hang out in bars, smoke, wish you had more money? Prostitution for her isn't much more interesting than pinball. In France, prostitution is called "the life," which gives another meaning to the title. There is a monotone Q&A conversation in which Raoul explains the rules of her new trade. Then the movie devolves into a crime story, and we are reminded that "Breathless" also ended in a violent shooting in the street, although in "My Life to Live," the camera sees the violent moment and then_looks down! Down at the street, or at its feet. The film looks away from its own ending.

There is a scene in a cafe a little earlier, with Nana in conversation with the man at the next table, a philosopher (Brice Parain, apparently playing himself). He tells her the story of a man who runs away from danger, and then stops, paralyzed by the thought of how to put one foot in front of another. "The first time he thought," observes the philosopher, "it killed him."

If she thinks, will it kill her? We notice her openness, her curiosity, in talking to the old man. This from a woman who has been reluctant to reveal any thoughts or feelings, who has been all surface. We are reminded of a story Paul told earlier in the film, about a child who explained that if you take away the outside of a chicken, you have the inside, and if you take away the inside, you have the soul. Nana is all outside.
