It contains an incredibly surreal scene that mocks the failings of communism in an unmistakable manner. "

Zdenek Podskalsky is not actually part of Czechoslovak new wave. He started making films in 1950. Almost all of his films were crazy comedies and films for TV. Film Bila Pani (White Lady) is one of his social commedies and in my opinion it's the best film he made. This film is based on a book by Karel Michl.

Film is situated in a small town Komonice in the 60's, the time of communism where the only party, represented by chariman of people's committee and his secretary instead of taking care of the people's needs they build up a fountain. There's a castle in the Komonice and according to a legend there is good ghost in the castle - White lady. She emerges from the painting on the wall when someone speaks out magic formula. White lady builds up a water supply for an old woman who asked for that by the painting. Then she makes a new fence and pavement... Not only her acts but even her existence is not suitable for chairman and his secretary but they find something better than forbiden her. They want to make a plan for her which is going to be planned and then checked by local people's committee and than it would be presented as a work of working class.

Film is full of humour outgoing from everyday communist reality and empty phrases of Communist party leaders.

Six outwardly average individuals have elaborate fetishes they indulge with surreptitious care. A mousy letter carrier makes dough balls she grotesquely ingests before bed. A shop clerk fixates on a TV news reader while he builds a machine to massage and masturbate him. One of his customers makes an elaborate chicken costume for a voodoo-like scene with a doll resembling his plump neighbor. She, in turn, has a doll that resembles him, which she whips and dominates in an abandoned church. The TV news reader has her own fantasy involving carp. Her husband, who is indifferent to her, steals materials to fashion elaborate artifacts that he rubs, scrapes and rolls across his body.

Otakar Vávra - Kladivo na carodejnice AKA Witches' Hammer (1970)

The Czech New Wave rode the tide of political liberalization in Czechoslovakia that lasted throughout the 1960s, which accounted for their ability to make highly personal films in individual styles. At the same time, this generation attracted international attention and acclaim. However, they were not the only directors to benefit from the freer political climate. Older directors from the postwar period, and even those of the prewar generation, made films they probably could not have made earlier in their careers.

Witches' Hammer (Kladivo na Carodejnice), adapted from a novel by Vaclav Kaplicky, was historical drama roughly based on actual events, but Vavra became particularly fascinated with the subject matter while researching the film. Witches' Hammer is a tale about the witch trials in Czechoslovakia in the 17th century, which unfolds from the perspective of an educated priest. The priest watches as his village's most prosperous citizens are arrested by the Inquisitor, who impounds their property. The priest tries to stop the false accusations and fear-mongering, but he himself is unjustly accused. As he started the project, Vavra grew increasingly interested in the history behind the witch trials-why it happened in a country that did not practice witchcraft, how the victims were manipulated into confessing to actions they did not commit, and why they begged for swift punishment.

He sought the help of archivist Dr. Frantisek Spurny, who agreed to translate for Vavra the original 17th century accounts of about 200 witch trials, complete with authentic quotes from actual participants. From this material, Vavra and screenwriter Ester Krumbachova wrote the screenplay. It is not difficult to see the witch trials of long ago as a metaphor for recent Czechoslovakian history; in his 1995 autobiography, The Strange Life of a Director, Vavra recalls that the story reminded him of the political trials staged by the Communists during the 1950s.

Shot in moody black and white, the film was marked by striking imagery and a haunting atmosphere. Vavra considered it his best film. However, at the time, the authorities did not want the film to be shown in Prague, because of its political connotations. It was restricted to the theaters in small towns just outside of Prague. Despite these restrictions, the film was quite successful. According to Vavra, more than a million and a half viewers saw the film in its initial release.

Frantisek Vlácil - Stíny horkého léta aka Shadows of a Hot Summer (1978)

Once more, Vlacil's films are largely about subjects that are not seen on screen. With some spoilers, here we have a story set in 1947 when Ukrainian right-wing anti-Communist guerillas, looking like and feeling like Nazi's, are trying to fight their way through Czechoslovakia to Austria. They come out of the forest to occupy a family's countryside farm house, kidnapping a doctor to help heal one of their wounded, but this could just as easily be about the post-war occupying forces in Eastern Europe, or the occupying Soviet forces in the 60's, as there is an initial belief that there is nothing anyone can do, or to coin a STAR TREK phrase, `Resistance is futile.' The film has a very languid pace which establishes the mood and pace of this small village, much of it is wordless, with a Sergio Leone acid-western feel, easily the most outstanding feature is the original music by Zdenek Liska, which plays on the inner psychological turmoil, providing an unseen character in the film. The father gives the appearance of passivity, as he is outmanned and outgunned, while his eager young son wants a taste of immediate revenge. But a wiser course of action is called for, waiting, giving the impression he is yielding to their demands, as the father wants to protect the lives of his wife and children, which allows for large doses of screen time where various family members are performing daily farm chores, just trying to survive this ordeal, while interspersed in each frame are men with machine guns who sadistically threaten their every impulse. This farmhouse under occupation represents a country under occupation, all feel like helpless victims where every moment is spent in fear, any minute things could spin helplessly out of control, and this film skillfully gets under everyone's skin.

Although Vláèil was temperamentally drawn to historical reconstruction, his films were always intended, he said, as a dialogue with his own times. His themes can be summarised as reflecting the human distortions caused by cultural and ideological conflict. The historical themes of East vs West, Christianity vs paganism, and Czechs vs Germans could easily find their parallels in more contemporary ideological conflicts. The invading Ukrainian guerrillas in Stíny horkého léta (Shadows of a Hot Summer, 1977), where a Moravian farmer defends his home against occupation, were even interpreted as standing for the Warsaw Pact armies that invaded Czechoslovakia during the suppression of the Prague Spring of 1968.
