The odds of comedy and horror coming out to be something delightful and horrifying simultaneously are dim and slim. Classics like Frankenhooker, Army of Darkness, Shaun of the Dead and Beetlejuice are just some of the few stellar examples of when the two opposing genres clash. Ever since the Brit Edgar Wright’s dry undead “zomedy” Shaun of the Dead was released back in 2004, there haven’t been a whole lot of funny horror movies being made. Let me rephrase that before comment critics start blasting their opinions left and right with films like Severance (2006), Teeth (2007) and Otis (2008). They might be horror films, yes, they might be comedies, yes, but what they are not is laugh-out-loud funny. Only one horror comedy of the past five years has done this and so without further ado, I give you Diagnosis: Death.
Andre Chang is the teacher every kid would love to have in their classroom as he is funny and can be easily be bribed for higher grades. Juliet Reid is the attractive, barely 18-year-old girl every guy, and the occasional gal, wants to get their hands on. What do they have in common? Terminal cancer. The two enter an experimental treatment where the chances of receiving the drug instead of a placebo are next to none. While incarcerated for purposes of the treatment, the two share similar haunting experiences in the hallways and in their rooms. They join forces to figure out what is really going on in this loony bin turned “hospital”, the mysteries grow and grow pulling Andre and Juliet deeper into wonderland.
The plot of Diagnosis: Death is nothing new; it plays off the old psyche ward scenario, loose spirits, etc. What is the film’s core that really makes it interesting? A few things come to mind actually. First on the list is lead man Raybon Kan; he is a short Asian playing a selfish teacher named Andre who can use his quick talking abilities to con women into bed with him on the first date and who can also easily be ignored by others, except by Juliet. I’m going to religiously practice Andre’s rule about kissing on the first date; one date only lasts an hour and half, after that it is all game!
The second reason for the hilarity lies in the cameos by some of the Flight of the Concord’s crew. New Zealander Rhys Darby makes an appearance as the specialist who gives Andrew the ill-fated news. His onscreen time is less than 10 minutes yet he delivers laugh after laugh dialogue. You might also remember Darby as the bank manager from Yes Man. Jermaine Clement makes a brief cameo as well using a cheesy, rich-class accent while trying to bribe Andre in to giving his child an A for his C grade work. Darby’s and Clement’s presence heighten the sense of comic relief just enough to make scenes stand out funnier than they should actually be.
The last reason is the witty dialogue. The well written script by director Jason Stutter and lead man Raybon Kan is smart with a taste of black humor. The constant, lighthearted back and forth dialogue between Andre and Jessica and the repeating jabbing at one another with quick playful quips makes the pace of the film enjoyable and lets us forget that rehashed plot. Diagnosis: Death is the best horror comedy I’ve seen in years. You may have never heard of the cast, but don’t let that keep you from picking it up and enjoying the gags and gore. Besides, I don’t think you would want to pass up seeing Jessica Grace Smith; she is a very busty brunette making her debut feature film. Lightning Entertainment’s release of Diagnosis: Death landed on retail shelves this past December.
