Commissioned by Lloyd's for the London Sinfonietta, Writing on Water was first given a private performance on the trading floor of Lloyd's in September 2005 to mark Nelson's bicentenary year.
At that performance the audience was confronted by David Lang's hypnotic, minimalist score and Peter Greenaway's water-inspired libretto and visuals. Greenaway's libretto interwaves fragments of text from The Tempest, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Moby Dick and he uses state-of-the-art technology to mix film onto three screens positioned around the space. The 'writing' element features live calligraphy by Brody Neuenschwander, Greenaway's collaborator on Prospero's Books (1991) and The Pillow Book (1996), projected live creating an all-encompassing aural and visual experience.
