Sang-soo Im - Orae-doen jeongwon aka The Old Garden (2006)

After almost two decades in jail for his role in the Gwangju Massacre, which left several hundred students dead in May 1980, activist Oh Hyun-Woo is released into the 21st century. At loose ends, Oh revisits the country refuge where he was helped by pretty art teacher Han Yoon-Hee. A series of flashbacks, triggered by her paintings and writings, reveal their romance, his return to Seoul and eventual capture, and Han’s own trajectory from political engagement to artistic commitment. As a high-security prisoner, Oh is denied visits from Han and she dies from cancer ten years into his term without seeing him again. But she has left him a legacy that helps him find his direction again in the new Korea. Im Sang-Soo is no stranger to political drama (A Good Lawyer’s Wife, The President’s Last Bang) but The Old Garden is a political melodrama with a mature and sophisticated mise-en-scène. Seamlessly balancing the personal and political, Im moves his narrative with heartfelt emotional beats in a discourse about love and loyalty. He confronts the past not with nostalgia but as episodes of selfishness, selflessness and often unstated passion. This may be a film about the past but it lives, almost militantly so, in the present, and it stands as a defiant gesture against the superficial sentimentality into which many contemporary commercial Korean films have fallen.
