To understand a movie, which is history based, you have to be informed with some historycal facts.It covers the period from 1795, when Petar I Petrovic returned from Russia, till the battles at Martinci and Krusa in July and September of 1976.
At that time femine and powerty ruled a Montenegro. Sociaty was very rural and patriarchal. People were divided into tribes, consisted of large families. Blood revenge (eye for an eye) was common thing. It was time of bravery and knighthood. Many young men never returned from battles. Women are left widowed, girls without fathers and brothers (cutting their hair off is a sign of greave, as well as black clothes).
Petar I Petrovic was Bishop at the time. Though being a spiritual, church title Bishop also meant people's leader. But his authoritty was very questionable, at the time movie is occuring, due to disunity of Montenegrin tribes. There was no centralised government, as we know it today, no schools, no laws, no hospitals...
Faced with that situation, pressed with Turkish ocupation, Petar had to deal with awfull lot of troubles in order to unite Montenegrin Serbs.
I'll inform you with some of his biography, in order to understand movie better:
Petar I Petrović Njegoš (St. Peter of Cetinje) (1747-1830) was the ruler of Montenegro, the Cetinje Episcop of the Serbian Orthodox Church (Serbian: Vladika), and Exarch (claimholder) of the Serb Orthodox throne. He was the most popular spiritual and military leader from the Petrović dynasty. During his long rule, Petar strengthened the state by uniting the often quarreling tribes, consolidating his control over Montenegrin lands, introducing the first laws in Montenegro and launching the first program of national liberation and unification of Serbs.
He was made a bishop in 1784. During his trip to Russia (1785), Montenegro was attacked by Turkish forces. When Vladika Petar I returned from Russia, he began a war of liberation. At the crucial battle at Krusi (a village in Lješanska nahija) the Turkish Army of 30,000 led by Mahmut-Paša Bušatlija and assisted with seven French officers was defeated with heavy casualties by a force of 6,000 Montenegrins led by Vladika Petar I (3 Oct. 1796). In this famous battle Mahmut-pasha was killed. After the victory Petar enlarged the territory of Montenegro and became virtually independent of the Ottoman Empire.
He had unquestioned moral authority strengthened by his military successes. His rule prepared Montenegro for the subsequent introduction of modern institutions of the state: taxes, schools and larger commercial enterprises.
