Roswitha carries out abortions to feed her student husband Franz, and so she can afford to have more children. The police intervene and Franz is arrested. When he comes out of prison, Roswitha decides to enter politics and social work. A collage, or a jigsaw made up of fiction, documentary images, Chinese shadows, drawings, quotations from films and texts. The film advances with Roswitha - an isolated combatant armed with only her own strength - and her attempts to invent a revolt in society that she never manages to introduce into her own family.

Practising as abortionist Roswitha supports her family to be able to afford more children herself. For a provision she directs complicated cases into the hands of a well known doctor. When Roswitha claims payment, she is thrown out. Her competitor made a mistake but Roswitha is being blamed for it. She obliterates all traces but her husband gets arrested instead. He is released and has to support the family now himself. Roswitha looks for new possibilities: she engages in politics. Looking out for opportunities to fight actively, she discovers that her husband's factory plans to shut down. In secret research and travelling she documents the shutting down, an intention meanwhile abandoned by the company's president. She hands out leaflets. Her husband is fired. Now it's Roswitha's turn again to support the family. In front of the factory she has built a kiosk. She sells hotdogs wrapped in informational material. Alexander Kluges learn and thesis film demonstrates the contradictions and interrelations between theory and practice, politics and everyday life, social obligations and private feeling. The provocative description of an abortion as well as attacks on the part of the Federal Ministry of the Interior made the film a scandal and a matter in dispute.
