Each gang into which Tony intrudes consists of five members, two female and three male. In the opening sequence, each child is associated with a certain object or characteristic which subsequently reappears among the gangsters. Hence, just as Tony himself begins to wear a brown velvet jacket (identical to that worn by his younger self) once he joins Charley's gang, so he is also confronted with Pepper's quizzical smile, Sugar's apple tart, Mattone's comic book, Ritzio's billiard ball, and Charley's penknife, all precise repetitions of his childhood experience. And while that experience was symbolised by the Cheshire cat, so elements from Lewis Carroll recur in the adult domain of the gangsters. Their hideout, the aptly named "Cheshire Cat Inn," is a house in an enchanted garden, topographically akin to the setting of Alice in Wonderland.
