The story of Private Hamp, a deserter from the battle front in World War I, has already been told on radio, television and the stage, but undeterred by this exposure, director Joseph Losey has attacked the subject with confidence and vigor, and the result is a highly sensitive and emotional drama, enlivened by sterling performances and a sincere screenplay.
The action takes place behind the lines at Passchendaele, where Hamp, a volunteer at the outbreak of war, and the sole survivor of his company, decides one day to 'go for a walk'. In fact, he contemplates walking to his home in London, but after more than 24 hours on the road, he's picked up by the Military Police and sent back to his unit to face court-martial for desertion.
The job of defending the private goes to Dirk Bogarde, a typically arrogant officer who accepts the assignment because it is his duty to do so. But during his preliminary investigation, he responds to Hamp's beguiling simplicity and honesty, coming to the inevitable conclusion that he was not responsible for his actions.
Notwithstanding its technical excellence, the picture [based on a play by John Wilson and a novel by James Lansdale Hodson] is carried by the outstanding performances of its three stars. Tom Courtenay gives a compelling study of a simple minded soldier, unable to accept the fact that he has committed a heinous crime. Bogarde's portrayal of the defending officer is also distinguished by its sincerity. Completing the stellar trio, Leo McKern's study of the medical officer is faultless, and in his big scene he unerringly stands up to Bogarde's cross-examination.
