Yamina Bachir - Rachida (2002)

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/3186/rachidaposter8pd.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

A look at terrorism in Algeria through the eyes of Rachida, a teacher in one of the school districts.

Each coin is a dream - only the nightmare is free in this country.' This debut tells of a young Algerian woman, who's shot and left for dead after she refuses to plant a bomb at the school where she teaches. She escapes to a mountain village with her mother, where she eventually regains her confidence and returns to work. The storyline is simple and the camerawork unsophisticated, but writer/director Yamina Bachir-Chouikh attempts to explores some weightier, more awkward subjects, particularly those affecting Algerian women: the pressure on divorced women to hide their faces in shame, the impossibility of marriage for girls who are raped by their kidnappers, as well as the ever present threat of violence and terrorism that plagues her country. Nadir Moknèche - Le Harem de Mme Osmane (2000)

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/mymoviesoninternet/posters/LHDMO.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

review - Variety:
Taking a roundabout approach to the ills of modern Algeria, "The Harem of Madame Osmane" is an offbeat comedy revolving around an apartment building run by a former freedom fighter who vents her frustrations by manipulating other women. This first feature by Nadir Mokneche, lensed in Morocco due to the dangerous political situation in Algeria, breaks through a weak script to make a sobering statement about the ingrained values that limit human relationships. In the currently desolate panorama of African cinema, the film stands out for its originality and should find considerable fest play this year.
Story is set in 1993 Algiers, when the first signs of civil war were appearing on streets patrolled by armed soldiers. In her corner house enclosed by high walls, Madame Osmane (Carmen Maura) is a comic tyrant, intent on controlling the lives of daughter Sakina (Linda Slimani), half-mad maid Meriem (Biyouna), French-born young wife Yasmine (Myriam Amarouchene) and a host of tenants.
Mokneche has difficulty controlling the farcical tone and broad humor of the overlong opening setup, marred by over-the-top shrieking from protags and mucho repetition. Viewers may also tire of the house setting, which far from being a harem is a prison created by the matriarch out of her fear of not seeming respectable without a man around. (Her beloved husband, also an ex-freedom fighter, is living in France with another woman.)
It comes as a relief when the women drive to a wedding party along the coast, where the chicly dressed Osmane manages to ruin Sakina's engagement to her biology teacher by insulting his mother, a tattooed peasant woman. Yasmine is shocked to discover her husband has a second wife, a saucy redhead (Nadia Kaci).
In the general uproar, Osmane ferociously imposes her will, bringing on pic's unexpectedly tragic but appropriate finale.
Held together by Maura's strong central perf, which finds focus and intensity as the film proceeds, pic reveals many surprising sides to femme life in Algeria, from the women's sexiness and freedom when they're alone, to the traditional values they force on themselves. Tech work takes a back seat to the upfront perfs (DEBORAH YOUNG)

Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina - Chronique des annees de braise AKA Chronicle of the Years of Fire (1975)

http://i48.tinypic.com/2d132c2.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Winner of the Palme d'Or in 1975, Chronique des années de braise is the film about the Algerian War of Independence, told through the perspective of a peasant. Allegedly, its epic scope of humanity in distress is comparable to the other great epics in cinematic history, like Lawrence of Arabia.

The quality is far and away from perfect - a notch above decent for VHSrips - but it's entirely watchable and the subtitles are perfectly visible.

Merzak Allouache - Bab El-Oued City (1994)

http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/6979/mv5bmtixnzm2otqznl5bml5.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Plot

The potential dangers inherent in the continued increase of Islamic fundamentalism in Algeria is clearly portrayed in this European political drama. The film is set in early 1993 and takes place in a decaying neighborhood, Bab El-Oued. The central character in this scary drama is Boualem, a young baker. Throughout his neighborhood the fundamentalists, locally led by the fanatical Said, have placed loud-speakers upon the rooftops to broadcast their hateful propaganda. Unable to stand the noise any longer, Boualem destroys a speaker and tosses it into the sea. Said promptly seeks to mow him down for his impudence. Said's sister, a liberal who resents having to wear a veil and behave in traditional ways, has been seeing Boualem. He loses his job after Said pushes his boss, who actually despises Said, but fears retaliation, to fire him. Surrounding the main plot are many sub stories, each of which sharply illustrates the dangers of fundamentalism.

Yamina Benguigui - Inch'Allah dimanche (2001)

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/6677/inchallahdimanche3sf.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

French/Algerian director Yamina Benguigi brings us a passionate immigrant story of a woman struggling against old world traditions. Zouina leaves her homeland with her three children to join her husband in France, where he's been living for the past ten years. In a land and culture foreign to her, Zouina struggles against her mother-in-law's tyrannical hand and her husband's distrustful bitterness in an attempt to adjust to her life in exile.
---
INCH'ALLAH DIMANCHE, a deep and poetic film about the immigrant experiences of an Algerian family in France, is set in the aftermath of WWII. In an attempt to replenish its weakened work force, France recruits men from North Africa. Years later, in 1974, the government invites their wives and children to join them and immigrate to France.

Zouina (played in a near-silent and richly emotional performance by Fejria Deliba) is an Algerian woman with three young children who travels with her mother-in-law, Aicha (played in an abrupt, hostile, and powerful performance by Rabia Modedem), to meet her husband, Ahmed (Zinedine Soualem). Torn from her own loving mother and harshly browbeaten by Aicha, Zouina rejoins a distant husband who scorns her and finds herself imprisoned in a land that is foreign and unaccommodating to her Algerian traditions. Her neighbor, Madame Donze (a hilarious France Darry), is both fearful of Zouina's otherness and so obsessed with winning the prize for the best flower garden that she cannot empathize with Zouina. Meanwhile, a young woman who works in a makeup factory, Nicole (Mathilde Seigner), helps Zouina feel accepted, and sparks her interest in French culture and the new world around her. It is this curiosity, and Zouina's longing for freedom and experience, that drives Zouina to take secret excursions with her children on Sundays, the one day that her husband and mother-in-law are out of the house. Through these little adventures, she comes to terms with the difficulties of immigration, change, and adaptation to a new culture. INCH'ALLAH DIMANCHE is a complex, textured film with a beautiful, moving soundtrack, and excellent performances by its delectable cast.

This film was included in the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema 2002 festival organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City.
