Claude Chabrol - Les Cousins (1959)

The town mouse and his country cousin. Or, the story of two students, one who was very, very good, and one who was very, very bad; but the bad one passed his exams, got the girl (when he wanted her), and survived to live profitably ever after. A fine, richly detailed tableau of student life in Paris, and Chabrol's first statement (in his second film) of his sardonic view of life as a matter of the survival of the fittest. The centrepiece, as so often in the early days of the nouvelle vague, is an orgiastic party climaxed, as the guest sleeps it off next morning, by a sublimely cruel and characteristic 'joke' by the bad cousin (Brialy) when he performs an eerie Wagnerian charade with candelabra and Gestapo cap to wake a Jewish student into nightmare.

Claude Chabrol - Alice ou la dernière fugue aka Alice or The Last Escapade (1977)

Alice, fleeing her boring boyfriend, arrives at a mysterious house which turns out very difficult to leave. A dreamlike cross between Alice in Wonderland and a Borges story - a veritable garden of forking paths. Quite unusual for Chabrol and little known today, but deserving a re-discovery.

Claude Chabrol - Le Beau Serge (1958)

Le Beau Serge was the first film of French critic-turned-director Claude Chabrol. Though not a murder melodrama, the film is heavily influenced by the works of Chabrol's idol Alfred Hitchcock, Shadow of a Doubt in particular. Ailing city dweller François (Jean-Claude Brialy) makes a therapeutic return visit to his home town in the country. Here he visits childhood friend Serge (Gerard Blain), and is appalled to find how far Serge has plummeted into alcoholism and self-pity. The two protagonists indulge in a transference of personal guilt, then an "exchange of redemption" (to quote Chabrol chronicler Charles Derry). Highly influential in the French New Wave movement of the 1950s, Le Beau Serge has something very special to say about the care and nurturing of friendship, especially one that has dimmed with distance and time. Both male stars, as well as leading lady Bernadette Lafont, would continue working with director Chabrol for the remainder of his career. ~ All Movie Guide

Claude Chabrol - Les Bonnes Femmes AKA The Good Time Girls (1960)

Ginette, Rita, Jacqueline and Jane try to find fulfillment and love in their lives. Rita has a fiancé whose family is obsessed with social distinction; Jane has a boy-friend in the army, but does not hesitate to enjoy herself with chance encounters; Ginette has a mysterious passion that keeps her away from her colleagues at nights. Jacqueline is lonely; but who is that mysterious bike-rider who is constantly following her ?

Be careful. Claude Chabrol's early film can initially under-whelm, especially in the first 9/10th's of the narrative, but upon re-examination it appears to address a number of prevalent themes and issues. Especially that love and danger can wander very close together. It starts by representing a drab and dingy Paris of the early sixties with pretty four shop-keeping girls who are looking for love, whilst fending off the advances of two obvious would-be lothario's. While their lecherous and petty boss savors every opportunity to deliver an almost comedic dressing down, the girls find emotional escape by casually flirting with delivery men, wandering the nightclubs or gossiping about the enigmatic motorcyclist following Jacqueline, the doe-eyed romantic. For the vulnerable, timid Jacqueline, his dogged persistence can only signify the true love in which she fervently longs for. Her nagging suspicions are too easily overcome and even this potential beau, named Andre, is aware of her failing. Claude Chabrol's film is a deft blend of frank eroticism, moments of Hitchcockian suspense and the cinematic derring-do of the best of the French New Wave.
