http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v712/buttzilla/_193920Ninotchka20ing2001.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Synopsis
Ninotchka is a stern, straightlaced Communist Party member sent to Paris to finish the sale of Grand Duchess Swana's jewels for the Soviet government. But, while studying the frivolous materialism of Paris, Ninotchka meets Leon, Swana's lawyer and sometime lover, and the two become enamored with one another -- without knowing each other's identity. The Grand Duchess, in the meantime, is suing the USSR for ownership of the jewels. What follows is a delicate web of intrigue and deception as Swana tries to blackmail Ninotchka into leaving Paris. Soon the two lovers have to overcome political hurdles and cross borders just to be together.

Ernst Lubitsch - So This Is Paris (1926)

http://www.lubitsch.com/images/postergallery/slides/So_This_Is_Paris_1926_US_A.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

A sadly neglected gem from Ernst Lubitsch, a marriage farce that should rank just below The Marriage Circle, but sadly has been little seen. Starring Monte Blue, Lilyan Tashman, and blink and you'll miss her Myrna Loy, playing a maid. Some nice directorial touches and camera tricks by Lubitsch, and the wonderful Charleston sequence, which has been called "the closest silent film ever came to being musical", highlight this fun as hell film.

Ernst Lubitsch - Lady Windermere's Fan (1925)

http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/2335/ladywind7wj.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Mrs Erlynne, the mother of Lady Windermere - her daughter does not know about her - wants to be introduced in society, so that she can marry Lord Augustus Lorton. Lord Windermere, who helped her with a cheque, invites her to his wifes birthday-party, but Lady Windermere thinks, she has reason to be jealous, so she decides to leave her husband and go to Lord Darlington, who is pining for her. Mrs Erlynne finds this out and tries to prevent her of this mistake, but her daughter leaves her fan in Lord Darlingtons residence.
Lady Windermere's Fan (1925)

Ronald Colman is the title character, by the name of Lord Darlington, in this Ernst Lubitsch silent gem. Early on, Coleman tells Lady Windermere (May McAvoy) that he is in love with her. Her husband, Lord Windermere (Bert Lytell) receives a letter from Mrs. Erlynne (Irene Rich), a social outcast, that she must see him. When he does, he is told by Mrs. Erlynne that his wife is her daughter (out of wedlock? the reason she's a social outcast?) and blackmails him for hush up money. The well dressed Erlynne is shunned by all the society women wherever she goes. However, at the racetrack one day, she is followed out by Lord Augustus Lorton (Edward Martindel), who begins a clandestine affair with her. Emboldened, she summons Lord W. again in order to secure an invitation to Lady W.'s birthday party. Fearful that she'll reveal her secret, he reluctantly agrees. Meanwhile Colman, because of his love for Lady W., tells her that she will find a check to Mrs. Erlynne in her husband's desk. When she does, she is convinced that her husband is having an affair. When she confronts him shortly before the party, he tells her that he is just helping the woman who is "down on her luck", but then sends a letter to Mrs. Erlynne asking her not to come. However, Mrs. Erlynne doesn't open the letter, assuming it is an invitation, and rushes to the party. At that time, she learns she is not on the guest list, but Lord Lorton shows up and escorts her inside. Initially furious at her husband, Lady W. greets Mrs. Erlynne who then proceeds to overcome everyone's initial reaction to her, and becomes the life of the party. Colman attempts to woo Lady W. again and is successful, such that she departs for his apartment.

Ernst Lubitsch - Anna Boleyn (1920)

http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x1/frombr/1164575292.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

35mm Restoration by the F.W. Murnau Foundation.

Before he became one of Hollywood’s legendary directors, Ernst Lubitsch was among the leading figures in the German film industry during the silent era, known both for his biting comedies and his groundbreaking costume dramas. His historical epic Anna Boleyn found success at the American box office under the title Deception, and viewed today, it is a rare opportunity to see Lubitsch working in a genre other than his usual realm of sophisticated comedy.

The tragic story of the second wife of England’s Henry VIII is given a first-class treatment by Lubitsch, complete with opulent sets and some beautifully-shot exterior sequences. Henny Porten (Kohlhiesel’s Daughter, Backstairs) gives a memorable performance as Boleyn, but the film really belongs to Emil Jannings (The Last Laugh, The Blue Angel), one of Germany’s greatest screen stars, playing Henry. Jannings’s bravura performance conveys Henry’s decadence through his insatiable appetite for both food and women, but never reduces him to caricature or pure villain. Jannings also establishes the screen model for Henry that would be further developed by Charles Laughton almost fifteen years later in The Private Life of Henry VIII.

Anna Boleyn was the second of Lubitsch’s German films to be released in the U.S., following Madame Dubarry. It was a notable success with both the critics and the public, and helped to elevate Lubitsch’s international reputation. After making three more films in Germany, Lubitsch accepted an invitation from Mary Pickford to come to Hollywood to direct her film Rosita – and the rest, as they say, is history. ~ www.kino.com
