Kaaren Kaer - Malev aka Men at Arms (2005)

http://preview.filesonic.com/img/7831.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

"Estonian history gets a topsy-turvy interpretation in this satiric comedy from director Kaaren Kaer. Uru (Ott Sepp) is an adventurous young man who has been getting in touch with his compassionate side while studying at a monastery. When he comes back home to Estonia, he finds things are not as he might have hoped; both France and Germany are trying to lay claim to his homeland, and the nation is preparing itself for a long battle to win its independence. Despite his non-violent philosophy, Uru is drawn into the war to free his people, though it soon becomes evident neither strategy or combat skills are his strong suit. Malev (aka Men At Arms) was written by members of O-Fraktsioon, a noted Estonian sketch-comedy troupe. "

To check the list at the EFA official site go here and/or here that's the European Film Awards official site.

To my HUGE surprise the famous Swedish film is not in the list, but as you noticed in the previous post was selected for the People's Choice Award. Believe that somehow I understand why is not in this list as the movie is not as good as the amazing Noomi Rapace performance. What I regret the most is that she can't be nominated for Best Actress, but maybe a kind of 'miracle' could happen and she will be nominated (not really a miracle, she's in the other awards).

As we already know some of the European countries submission to the 2011 Oscar calls my attention that what the EFA recommended and what was submitted does not match for some countries. Interesting as criteria for selection has to be influenced by what everybody believes are the USA Academy members tastes. After all American cinema and European cinema are VERY different and you have no idea how glad I am.

Sooner that we imagine the Seville fest will open and we will learn the nominations.

Cheers!!!

2010 European Film Academy - People's Choice Award

Since September 1st all my European friends are able to cast their vote for their favorite European film of the Year. Those who vote will have a chance to attend the 23rd European Film Awards on Saturday, December 4th in the Estonian capital Tallin on the Baltic coast.

These are the nominated films.

Agora, Alejandro Amenabar, Spain
Baaria, Giuseppe Tornatore, Italy
An Education, Lone Scherfig, UK
Flickan Som Lekte Med Elden (The Girl Who Played With Fire), Daniel Alfredson, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany
The Ghost Writer, Roman Polanski, France, Germany, and UK
Kick-Ass, Matthew Vaughn, UK
Mine Vaganti (Loose Cannons), Ferzan Ozpetek, Italy (gay interest)
Mr. Nobody, Jaco Van Dormael, Belgium
Le Petit Nicolas (Little Nicholas), Laurent Tirard, France
Soul Kitchen, Fatih Akin, Germany

To cast your vote please go here.

If I could vote my vote absolutely will go to the famous Swedish film starring Noomi Rapace; but I also liked An Education. Then you have two movies by two of my favorite directors, Ferzan Ozpetek and Fatih Akin that haven't seen, plus I'm curious about Baaria that I should watch soon. One film I'm sure will not get my vote, Polanski's film as I didn't enjoyed much that film and is competing against very good films/directors.

Hope all of you, that can vote, will cast your vote for your favorite film.

Cheers!!!

http://f.imagehost.org/0539/P_ha.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

The most stupendous and bone chilling tragedy about the agony and decline of one middle-level manager.
Tony develops an aversion to gushing claims of his goodness and the issue starts to haunt him. Is he good? Why should one be good? Whom would it benefit? While Tony thinks and thinks, he is forced to fire one thousand employees under his command, to be a witness to his wife's betrayal, to bury his grandfather and finally to find 12 pairs of human hands from the underbrush.
As Tony hopes to find a new and simpler life in a strip club with the help of a Russian secretary named Nadezha who is earning extra money by working there, fate steps into his life in the form of the mysterious Herr Meister. He gives Tony a choice; Either a rebellion doomed to failure and eventual decline, or absolute submission and a life full of power and enjoyment. Although Tony is accustomed to a worry-free life, he chooses rebellion - much to his own surprise - and loses.
A man is truly a bottomless abyss.

Arbo Tammiksaar - Fritsud ja blondiinid aka Nazis and Blondes (2008)

http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/2362/hitlerm.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Synopsis: What was the role of the Baltic film actors in creating the figure of the enemy in the Soviet time cinema?
Many generations of Soviet people were raised in the spirit of Soviet war films that were blockbusters and propaganda films at the same time. And these films really created the image of the enemy. Our movie is dealing with the fact that the most Nazi villains in soviet war movies were played by Baltic actors.
It’s ironical fact that the reasons why the Baltic actors were chosen to play the Nazi roles in that time were mostly physiognomic, but the consequences were political. The paradox is that personifying stereotypic Nazi villains in Soviet films these actors encouraged and uphold the stereotype that Baltic people were Nazi sympathisers. It’s an example of the power of the moving pictures creating powerful stereotypes.
We’ll take a closer look at the dissimilar fate of 3 Baltic film actors whose roles are similar by the simplified treatment of the enemy in the Soviet films. There are many hidden personal stories behind their roles...

Nazis and Blondes is a film consisting mostly of film footage (from Soviet and western film archives) and interviews which help to explain both the situation in the Soviet film industry and political context of the time. In the film we study the image of the Enemy in the Soviet war films that developed and changed at different times from the early 1940s till the end of the Soviet Union.
An elusion to the world of Blondes. One-eyed Estonian sexbomb Eve Kivi whips prisoners in a concentration camp in some Russian war movie in the middle of 70-ies. Was Susan Sontag right to see an element of eroticism in representation of Nazis?
What was the classification of the roles of fascists? Simple soldiers. Executioners. High profile villains. The more experienced and recognised the Baltic actor was, the more refrained adversary he was offered to play.
The Baltic actors who played the roles of Nazis did their job brilliantly. People recognised them in the streets, they got letters from all Soviet Union, they were beloved. But they never got awards for these roles.
We organised a reunion meeting of these old Baltic actors who played the roles of Nazi villains In Soviet war movies. It takes place in a medieval castle in the deep forest, as if it is a secret meeting. They gather to meet each other, look at old photos and movies. Award-giving Ceremony: Who gets the prize for the most cruel Nazi? But for the most humane Nazi? In the Reunion event the old men and women watch film clips from Soviet times, from their youth, when they were well known all over Soviet Union. When they were known as villains who managed to penetrate deep down into the subconscious of Soviet cinema audience.
Is an actor responsible for his roles?
The film “Nazis and Blondes” communicates the forced choices made by several generations of the Baltic actors who simply dreamed of fame on the screen in those times.

Veiko Õunpuu - Tühirand AKA Empty (2006)

http://img3.immage.de/0812ec6ba0cd100tyhirandbig.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Quote:

A young intellectual, Mati, engineers himself into a situation where he has to spend a weekend with his wife Helina and her lover Eduard. The trio goes to Eduard's summer house, surrounded by the majestic scenery of big forests and an empty beach. Mati, either out of jealousy or pride, has decided to win back his wife and will do anything his introverted and inert mind can come up with. What is love? Who can believe in such a thing? Is there anything at all to believe in? It can in its own minimalist way be a very funny experience and also a sad one to be dragged into this world. This film depicts with great accuracy how it is to feel love being an Estonian, someone who is used to low temperatures and repressed emotions. Written by Anonymous

Diego the bicyclist waits to check into the PGI hotel, where each room's inhabitant seems more bizarre than the last, and the rabbits on the top floor have discovered the secret of voodoo, using electronics and carrots. Can the rare and unpredictable night of the carrots save everyone, or will their connections to the room's electrical sockets restrain them too much? Will Diego find love with an egg that speaks incessantly in German? Will the cellist, who is actually a room full of a gelatinous substance, affected in some way by buttons labeled K, G, and B, have dreams that explain everything? Or will the audience just leave scratching their heads? Not all questions get answered.

http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u200/LL_KG/somnambuul.jpg

http://imdb.com/title/tt0385243/

Plot Synopsis
Autumn 1944, Estonia. Tens of thousands of people leave their homeland in fear of approaching frontline. Some seashore villages remain completely empty. A young woman with huge grey eyes gets off the boat. Eetla leaves the last boat, thus giving up her last chance to escape. Defying the cold wind and rain of September, she returns to the lighthouse which is unexpected to her father Gottfrid, the lighthouse keeper, and herself. Eetla's return becomes her self-encounter and self-recognition. Why is Eetla terrified of reality? For fear of tomorrow, anxiety for the unpredictable tomorrow. Eetla seeks refuge in her dreams, either dreamt or not dreamt ones, recounting them to her father or to a young doctor, a war refugee Kasper, or herself. It does not matter to whom. Reciting keeps alive the moment in between what has passed and what will come, in between yesterday and nescience. Like a prayer driven by fear to lose her balance. The balance between being awake and asleep. This fear to yield is Eetla's fear. "Somnambulance" is a psychological drama about the fear of losing balance.

Arvo Iho - Naerata ometi aka Well, Come On, Smile (1985)

http://www.cvmc.net/media/titlepics/n/NaerataOmeti.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Review:
The setting for this grim drama is a home for children of alcoholics, criminals, or emotionally impaired parents who do not want their children and cannot take care of them anyway. Mixed in with the traumatized teens at this institution are also orphans who almost seem to have it better. Mari (Monika Jarv) comes to the home after her drunken father throws her out of the house. She escapes immediately but then is forced back into the institution when she has a run-in with a group of street toughs. The kids in the institution give her a hard time and just when she is trying to survive their harrassment, she discovers that Robi (Hendrik Toompers), one of the teens who attacked her, is also a resident, and admired by the others because he antagonizes the teachers. Just as Mari's difficulties reach a climax, Robi steps in to help her, and from that moment onward, a friendship begins, albeit one with a very uncertain future. - Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
