Francis Ford Coppola - Dracula (1992)

Plot Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Based on Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel, this film from Francis Ford Coppola and screenwriter James Victor Hart offers a full-blooded portrait of the immortal Transylvanian vampire. The major departure from Stoker is one of motivation as Count Dracula (Gary Oldman) is motivated more by romance than by bloodlust. He punctures the necks as a means of avenging the death of his wife in the 15th century, and when he comes to London, it is specifically to meet heroine Mina Harker (Winona Ryder), the living image of his late wife (Ryder plays a dual role, as do several of her costars). Anthony Hopkins is obsessed vampire hunter Van Helsing, while Keanu Reeves takes on the role of Jonathan Harker, and Tom Waits plays bug-eating Renfield. Bram Stoker's Dracula was the winner of three Academy Awards.

Woody Allen & Francis Ford Coppola & Martin Scorsese - New York Stories (1989)

The omnibus film New York Stories is the product of three powerhouse filmmakers, with the best saved for last. The film is divided into three stories, each exploring a different aspect of life in the Big Apple. Life Lessons, directed by Martin Scorcese, is a Dostoevsky-like tale of the rarefied Art World, with Nick Nolte as a self-indulgent abstractionist who loves Rosanna Arquette, but can't bring himself to lie to her about her negligible artistic talents. Life Without Zoe, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is more than a little reminiscent of Kay Thompson's Eloise stories, with 12-year-old Zoe (Heather McComb) running amok at the Sherry-Netherland hotel while her parents are embarked upon a world-girdling vacation. The last and (as we said) the best is Woody Allen's Oedipus Wrecks, wherein a schnooky Jewish lawyer (guess who?) inadvertently "creates" the Jewish Mother From Hell: thanks to a misguided magic trick, Allen's mama (the incomparable Mae Questel) becomes a huge spectral vision on the New York skyline, telling everyone within earshot about her son's inadequacies! The cinematographer lineup on New York Stories includes Nestor Almendros, Vittorio Storaro and Sven Nykvist, whose very different photographic styles blend with for more harmony than the three directors' approaches.

A father and daughter move from Ireland to America to hide a crock of gold they have stolen from a leprechaun. They take root in the southern state of Missitucky but quickly become dismayed by the racial division in the area. Meanwhile, Og the leprechaun is not about to give up his goods so easily and sets off in pursuit of the pair. An Irishman named Finian (Fred Astaire) and his daughter Sharon (Petula Clark) have moved to Missitucky, a mythical state in the south. They brought with them a pot of gold they had stolen from the Leprechaun Og. Finian is convinced that if he buries the pot of gold on American soil that it will grow into a much larger pot of gold. He believes that is how Fort Knox came to have so much gold. Woody Mahoney (Don Francks) is a sharecropper who Sharon has fallen in love with. Unfortunately, Woody is being threatened by Senator Rawkins (Keenan Wynn) like all the others in the area. Finian is arguing with Og about three wishes while Sharon runs into trouble with the bigoted Senator. Sharon wishes that the Senator would turn black so that he could learn what it was like to live facing prejudice every day. Thanks to Og her wish came true. Og grants one last wish to save Sharon and Woody from being burned as witches

This cult favorite began as Francis Ford Coppola's UCLA thesis, ending up with a professional cast and nationwide release. Teen Peter Kastner undergoes his coming-of-age rites when, urged on by dad Rip Torn, he strikes out on own and moves to NYC. Every person Kastner meets is an eccentric's eccentric, from landlady Julie Harris to cop Dolph Sweet. Kastner's new friend Tony Bill, who works at the New York Public Library and accumulates pornography on side, introduces the boy to sex and drugs. Our hero truly matriculates to manhood after his heart is broken by disco dancer Elizabeth Hartman; he settles instead for Karen Black, still enough of an unknown quantity in 1966 to play against type as "the right girl". Adapted from a novel by David Benedictus, Big Boy is afflicted with usual youthful film-class fervor, crammed full of showoffish cinematic tricks that Coppola would eventually outgrow. But one can't deny that this seminal production is both heartfelt and energetic. To improve the film's saleability, distributors Seven Arts tacked on a music score by the Lovin' Spoonful, hardly necessary but very enjoyable appendange.
