Georges Franju - Judex [+Extras] (1963)

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/8999/judext.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Plot Synopsis by Hal Erickson

The characters and plot convolutions of the classic silent French serial Judex are thrust into a 1960s framework in this Georges Franju concoction. Channing Pollock plays a mysterious masked avenger who kidnaps evil-banker Michel Vitold, then sets about to turn the banker's friends and loved ones against him. At first appearing to be as wicked as his captive, Pollock is actually motivated by familial love: his father had been driven to suicide by Vitold. Pollock is successful in destroying his enemy, adding spice to the program by wedding Vitold's daughter Edith Scob. In keeping with the spirit of the original serial, Pollock pops in and out of the plotline decked out in impenetrable disguises. As with his earlier horror film Eyes without a Face (1960), director Franju invests his two-dimensional material in Judex with three-dimensional characters.

Georges Franju - La Faute de l'abbé Mouret AKA The Sin of Father Mouret (1970)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

dbdumonteil:

The IMDb users know George Franju as the "les yeux sans visage " director, one of the best horror movies (who said best?) France has ever produced. His "la Tete contre les Murs" was at least as interesting but his remake of Feuillade' s "Judex" was not as convincing.

"La faute de l'abbé Mouret" is one of the weakest books in the Rougon -Macquart saga .Its "scandalous" side -a priest falling in love with a beautiful girl-seems tame by today's standards ,and it already was thirty-five years ago when I saw the film in a theater. Also handicapped by Gillian Hills's amateurish playing ,the movie was a flop.Francis Huster ,an earnest thespian (he used to play Corneille's "Le Cid" ) became famous but he had to wait until the eighties .The lack of good parts in the films probably led him to come back to stage again in the nineties.Best parts take place in the village where Franju shows his die-hard anti-clericalism,and André Lacombe as Archangias steals every scene he is in.but all that concerns "the Paradou" (the garden) sounds "hippie" and has not worn well.

Georges Franju - Le Grand Méliès (1952)

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/5445/georgesmeliescollection.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Quote:
French filmmaker Georges Franju, director of Eyes Without a Face, Blood of the Beasts, and several other renowned classics, pays fond tribute to one of his forerunners in Le Grand Melies, a half-hour biography about early film director and innovator George Melies. Sequences from the director's life are re-created with the assistance of his family, with Melies' second wife appearing as herself and Melies' son Andre in the role of his father. The film details Melies' career, from his beginning as a stage magician to his fateful discovery of cinema at an exhibition by Lumiere. Inspired, Melies built his own film camera and set about revolutionizing the film industry with such groundbreaking works as Le Voyage dans la Lune (A Trip to the Moon). Considered the inventor of special effects, he was among the first to apply theatrical techniques, stage sets, and trick photography to film and exploit the medium's potential for fantasy. However, his business acumen was not equal to his artistic and technical skill; the film also shows how Melies soon found himself ruined by a proliferation of imitators. Franju ends his fond recollection with a personal tribute, acknowledging Melies' role in making his own films possible. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

Georges Franju - Pleins Feux sur l'assassin AKA Spotlight on a Murderer (1961)

http://www.cinema-francais.fr/images/affiches/affiches_f/affiches_franju_georges/pleins_feux_sur_l_assassin.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

dbdumonteil:

Georges Franju's best works remain his earlier ones:his shorts ("le Sang des bêtes)and his two first efforts "la Tête contre les Murs" and "Les Yeux sans Visage" (the latter's influence was considerable ,notably on Amenabar's "abre los ojos"(and " Vanilla Sky", its mediocre remake ).

"Pleins Feux sur l'Assassin" is "eyes without a face"' s follow -up.As you do not change a winning team,Boileau-Narcejac (even if their names are not widely known, everyone knows "Diabolique" and "Vertigo" ,both in the IMDb top 250, which were initially their novels) who adapted Jean Redon's novel in Franju 's precedent effort, wrote here the screenplay which is an original and which was never released ,to my knowledge ,as a novel.

It's moderately successful: Boileau-Narcejac ,as they did in "D'Entre les Morts" ("Vertigo") ,tried to mix thriller and supernatural .PLus Agatha Christie's whodunit.

An aristocrat dies but his heirs do not know where his body is .(but the viewer does, for the first minutes -Pierre Brasseur's short silent part- shows the old man dying). And ,which is worse, they cannot inherit ,because the body must be found ,or they would have to wait several years. In order to maintain their relative's desirable property, they set a Son et Lumière show up,based on an old legend from the Middle Ages: two lovers were caught in the act by the woman's husband and tragically died.(something like the old folk song "Matty Groves")

But it seems that someone is slowly doing away with the heirs ,and the culprit might be one of them. And the legend of long ago could repeat itself.

It is entertaining but it's a far cry from "les Yeux sans Visage". Franju was not to reach such heights afterward:his remake of Feuillade's "Judex" had its moments and both "Thomas L'Imposteur "and "Thérèse Desqueyroux" were estimable works which owed a lot to thespian Emmanuelle Riva.

Franju could have become the French Roman Polanski.

Georges Franju - Hôtel des Invalides (1952)

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/3865/vlcsnap2010062416h09m32.png

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Quote:
Commissioned by the French Ministry of Defense as an advertisement for the military, Hôtel des invalides is Franju’s cunning and subversive portrait of the Army Museum located within the titular gold-domed palace in Paris. Employing what was to become his signature blend of lyricism and horror, Franju deceptively deploys his anti-militarist views into an indictment against the idealization of war, swiftly subverting the pretext of the film. His iconoclastic and ironic approach was deemed a sacrilege and the film was temporary banned. Voiced by veteran actor Michel Simon, the film uses a music score by Maurice Jarre to underline the tragic contradictions haunting the Hôtel des invalides, where guns and glory accompany ‘eyes without a face.’ “[W]hat is probably not only his finest film, but by what may well be the greatest film made in France since the end of the war, bar none” (Cynthia Grenier, Sight and Sound).

Franju's third film commissioned by the French government, Hôtel des Invalides (1951), was a look at life inside a veterans' hospital. The film was commissioned as a tribute to the hospital and the War Museum, but Franju turned it into a film against the glorification of militarism. Franju later said that Hôtel des Invalides was his favorite of his three "slaughter" films.
