Edgardo Cozarinsky - Jean Cocteau, auto-portrait d'un inconnu (1985)

Jean Cocteau reminisces about the people he has known throughout his long life (he died at 74) in this fascinating documentary by Edgardo Cozarinsky. Starting with still photographs of Satie, Diaghilev, Nijinsky and Stravinsky just before the outbreak of World War one, Cocteau evokes the heady atmosphere of experimentation that was prevalent in Europe. In the Twenties, there is the affair with Radiguet, the only lover Cocteau had who was his equal, and who died very young. Stills show a very determined, even pugnacious, teenager.

There are scenes from the films, especially the famous ending of Les Parents terribles, with the jerky dolly shot, which had to be improvised. It's a wonderful trip down memory lane with an artist who knew everybody.

Hans Richter & Jean Cocteau - 8 X 8: A Chess Sonata in 8 Movements (1957)

Quote:

A masterpiece of experimental film and a projection of the surrealist vision into cinema by its outstanding artists. Described by Richter as "part Freud, part Lewis Carroll," it is a fairy tale for the subconscious based on the game of chess. This chess-sonata is played by a host of artists including Paul Bowles, Jean Cocteau, Julian Levy, Jacqueline Matisse, Jose Sert, Yves Tanguy, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst and Alexander Calder. "What interested me is the poetry of images, the melody and rhythm of forms and colors" (Hans Richter).

Quote:

Eight by Eight “A Chess Sonata in 8 Movement”, with music by John Latoche and Oscar Brand, is the second of Richter’s elaborate cinematic collaborations. Richter pays homage to Lewis Carroll’s use of chess in Through the Looking Glass. Using humor and chance, Richter creates a heavily symbolic, surreal world where kings, queens, and other players on the chess board act out some of life's episodes. Included are sculptor Alexander Calder constructing mobiles and setting them to motion, painter Max Ernst pursuing his wife, Dorothea, through the canyons of lower Manhattan and a rocky western landscape in an overplayed domestic struggle, and writer Jean Cocteau playing a pawn who whimsically becomes a queen. Eight by Eight is an imaginative journey through the symbols and satire of Surrealism.

Jean Cocteau - L'Aigle à Deux Têtes AKA The Eagle with Two Heads (1948)

Synopsis
Natasha, the queen of an unhappy kingdom, lives in seclusion in her castle, still mourning the death of her husband, the king, who died ten years ago. One evening, a young man breaks into her quarters and falls at her feet. Struck by his resemblance to her husband, Natasha conceals him from the police who are searching for him. Realising that the young man, Stanislas, is an anarchist who had planned to assassinate her, the queen declares that he was sent by fate to kill her and so put an end to her years of grief. However, their destiny appears to follow a different path when Stanislas and Natasha discover they are in love...

Quote:

Political intrigue and 19th century romanticism form the basis for this haunting tale of love from one of France’s greatest creative talents, Jean Cocteau. The film was adapted from a successful stage play of the same name which Cocteau staged in 1946 with the same cast. The story was inspired by the mysterious death of King Louis II of Bavaria, who was found drowned after having strangled his doctor, and the death of Queen Elisabeth of Austria at the hands of an anarchist.

Jean Cocteau - Les parents terribles AKA The Storm Within (1948)

[User Rating:7.1/10]

In a grand apartment, where the disorder of an elderly couple and the order of old aunt Léonie are mixed together, Michel is the pampered child of this strange "roulotte" who seems to be rolling away from the world. Yvonne idolizes her son so much she forgets her husband. She would even forget herself if she did not have to take care of his insulin treatment. When Michel sleeps out for the first time, he vows to his mother (who he nicknames "Sophie") that he loves Madeleine, a young woman who he wishes to present to her. At first reticent, then jealous and exclusive, Yvonne ends up capitulating before her son's sorrow and his sister Léonie's insistence. In the meantime, we discover that Madeleine already has an "old" lover who she wants to break up with, who is none other than Georges, Michel's father. Aunt Léo attempts to bring order to this tragic comedy of life. (Wiki)

Jean Cocteau's filming of his 1938 play ten years later is both a lesson in mise en scene and an illustration of the paradox that accentuating the theatrical aspects of theater on-screen makes them quintessentially cinematic (Cf André Bazin - What is cinema) - To my knowledge, the only other film that does this to the same degree is Kon Ichikawa's An Actor's Revenge. The accomplishment becomes all the more impressive if one considers how mannered and affected Cocteau's material is. The sheltered son of a middle-aged couple living with the wife's unmarried sister falls in love with a young woman without realizing that she's his father's mistress, and the terror faced by the mother at the prospect of losing her son is matched by terror faced by the mistress in being exposed. The characters may seem outlandish individually, but collectively they bring credence to one another as the plot unfolds in two claustrophobic flats, and the cast is masterful: Jean Marais, Josette Day, Yvonne de Bray, Marcel Andre, Gabrielle Dorzoat. Cocteau cuts and moves his camera in ways that are both eccentric and definitive. (Jonathan Rosenbaum)

Jean Cocteau - Orphée (1950)

Orpheus (French: Orphée) is a 1949 French film directed by Jean Cocteau and starring Jean Marais. This film is the central part of Cocteau's Orphic Trilogy, which consists of The Blood of a Poet (1930), Orpheus (1949) and Testament of Orpheus (1960). The trilogy has been released as a DVD boxed set by The Criterion Collection.

Set in contemporary Paris, the movie is a variation of the classic Greek myth of Orpheus. At the Café des Poètes a brawl is staged by acolytes of the Princess (Casares) and the young poet Cègeste (Edouard Dermithe), the rival of Orpheus the poet, is killed. Cègeste is taken to the car of the princess by her associates, and Orpheus is asked to accompany them as a witness. They drive to a chateau (the landscape through the car windows are presented in negative) acompanied by abstract poetry on the radio. This takes the form of seemingly meaningless messages which are like those broadcast to the French Resistance from London during the Occupation.

Orpheus (Marais) becomes obsessed with Death, the Princess (Casares)), while one of Death's associates, Heurtebise (Périer), the Princess' chauffeur, entertains analogous unrequited love for Eurydice (Marie Déa). They fall in love. Orpheus's wife, Eurydice, is killed by the Princess' henchmen and Orpheus goes after her into the Underworld. Although they have become dangerously entangled, the Princess sends Orpheus back out of the Underworld, to carry on his life with Eurydice, but he cannot look at her or she will die. (This diverges from the common classical account found in the Roman versions of the myth by Ovid and Virgil, where Eurydice is lost forever.) It is all a dream, Eurydice is revealed to be alive, and expecting a child.
