Келін (Kelin)

It took me a while but finally I was able to watch the debut film by Ermek Tursunov who used to be a journalist-screenwriter but after watching this amazing film have to agree that is a master filmmaker in the making as this unique film not only has very innovative storytelling but also looks and feels like a very modern Greek tragedy set in the cold/white Kazakh steppe. What’s really innovative is that film has not even one word and honestly you don’t miss dialogue at all thanks to excellent performances by what I believe are non-actors. Exceptional.

I tend to like films with very little dialogue when images and visual storytelling are compelling; this is the most “almost-perfect” film where filmmakers can learn the amazing powerful value of images and how sometimes words are not only useless but also needless when actors can perform with body language and facial expressions absolutely everything. Please remember that the film is set in the steppes, so actors have clothes up to their noses and still, they had excellent body language communication with each other and with us viewers. Amazing.

Film tells about a woman, Kelin that is ‘sold’ by her father to the richest suitor, who happens not to be the man she’s in-love and loves her back. After a dramatic blood pact with the man she loves, Kelin leaves with her husband to her new home where a mother-in-law and a brother-in-law awaits for them. As she settles in her new home she discovers the pleasure and happiness of married life, but eventually the man she loves comes back and a drama like you have seen many times before with lots of words explodes, but here not even one word is said and you probably will feel everything more than ever before.

Extraordinary cinematography and truly magnificent takes of Gulsharat Zhubyeva who plays Kelin make this movie a visual delight, but is the strong silent drama what really makes this film absolutely out of the ordinary and must be seen for many that appreciate great cinema. It’s a beautiful and powerful movie with a ‘common’ story told silently without a single word.

I strongly suggest that if you haven’t watch it yet, don’t wait any longer and immerse yourself into this unbelievable good cinema wordless experience. The film was Kazakhstan submission to 2010 Oscar and film was one of the nine selected in the short list, which now I believe was an honor highly deserved.

Big Enjoy!!!

Ardak Amirkulov - Gibel Otrara AKA The Fall of Otrar (1991)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Ardak Amirkulov is one of the best directors of the New Kazakh Wave.

An amalgam of influences ranging from Ivan the Terrible to Andrei Rublev (Amirkulov shot Kairkhan's death from The Fall of Otrar as a tribute to Andrei Tarkovskii's film Andrei Rublev) to Conan the Barbarian with quite a lot of Kurosawa/Mifune samurai epics, of late John Ford-style western epics, or of Peckinpah thrown in as well - making a unique whole. Inexplicably shot on both color and black and white stock with little transitional logic. At times threatening to lapse into incoherence, but never quite abandoning the audience. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, Amirkulov must have been enjoying almost total artistic freedom: as evidenced by the near-constant violence, a good deal of nudity, and plenty of religious discussion, no censorship of any kind has been imposed by the state. This is one of those occasions where the moviemakers went to great trouble and expense to produce something that looks and feels like primal folklore.

Fascinating epic The Fall of Otrar is a vivid and surprisingly historically accurate account of events in the 13th century which foreshadowed events of worldwide significance. Perhaps a bit of historical background will help viewers appreciate this film more.

***
In the early part of the 13th century, having consolidated the Mongol tribes, Chinggis Khan began his first overtures to the western domains by sending a caravan of several hundred camels carrying great quantities of silk, silver, gold, and other goods to the realm of Khwarizm, whose Shah Mohammed was the greatest power between the Indian subcontinent and Baghdad. The Shah's mother was not Persian but from the Central Asian Turkic Kanglis tribe, which supplied the Shah with his cavalry and provided the primary basis for his power. The Shah and the Caliph of Baghdad were involved in various intrigues against each other and jockeying for supreme influence over the Islamic peoples and lands. When the caravan stopped in the border town of Otrar located along the Silk Road, the local governor could not help himself and killed the merchants and seized all the valuables. When Chinggis Khan sent an ambassador to the Shah with a polite request to right this wrong, the Shah, not yet knowing that he was dealing with the future world conqueror, killed the ambassador and burned the beards of his military escorts. The Mongols considered ambassadors inviolable, and an attack on Chinggis Khan's ambassador was tantamount to an attack on the Great Khan himself. This triggered the Great Khan to summon all of his troops and to lead the first Mongol campaign to the western regions outside of their traditional lands, an onslaught which did not stop until the Caliph of Baghdad was trampled under Mongol hoofs, the Russians utterly defeated, innumerable other foes vanquished, and Mongols consolidated under their rule virtually all of the lands of Asia and Europe from the China Sea to gates of Vienna, creating the greatest land-based empire in history. This Pax Mongolica made possible Marco Polo's subsequent journey to China. Thus, Otrar was the first stop and the calm before this ferocious storm - a storm which perhaps could have been averted - or at least postponed - had the governor not been so greedy, or if Shah Mohammed had righted the wrong (IMDb)

Kalykbek Salykov - Balkon (1988)

http://i794.photobucket.com/albums/yy227/yun-xiang/s3913186.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: "Good sense is an appeal to many times already proven" retro ", undertaken in the movie" Balcony "(based on the poetry O. Suleimenova) director of the Alma-Ata Kalykbekom Salykovym. How much - from the political and social realities of the past - could be added today to the way of everyday early 50-ies! What passions fill the grounds that a few years ago, "retro" barely had planned! Agonizing Stalin's era with its exaggerated images, "Doctors," the burdens of existence of those whose relatives have been repressed, finally, the enigmatic Solntselov (the film takes place in Alma-Ata), who came to us recently from the pages of the novel Y. Dombrowski "Faculty of unnecessary things "- all this in some way reflected in the film. But the director does not forget that the domestic law of "retro" - the harmony of the senses. No matter how dramatic reversals native history, their raises to life today, the human mind, with love and gratitude recalls his usual and unique childhood. There is a "balcony" of such an episode: riding on the spring sunshine Aydar - The main character - on the horse. He's coming - the envy of his friends, and we along with him proudly look to the world. Just this: the point of shooting at two - three heads taller than most Aydar? He is such a feel, what can you do ... "

Rashid Nugmanov - Igla AKA The Needle (1988)

http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/4389/400817iglaxh5.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Who is Moro? A Western superman, a cultural hero and a trickster, who descended to the Earth to restore order and justice. As soon as he enters the frame he evokes a number of cinema allusions of Western rebels: young Marlon Brando, James Dean, and popular that time Bruce Lee. The soundtrack contains fragments of the French and German language lessons. Moro ("a needle" in the Kazakh language) is dressed in a black leather jacket and gloves. He swings a key-chain that plays a Disney tune. He has two problems to solve: Spartak owes him money and Dina needs to be taken off the needle. In both cases he has to fight. That is his main virtue. Besides, he is a free-spirit, fearless, fair and honest.

The Needle by Rashid Nugmanov was not only the starting point for the Kazakh new wave but also for the entire "perestroika" cinema. The artistic underground of the Soviet Union became "legalized" for the first time in this film. The middle of the 1980s was the period when the "non-official" and "nonconformist" arts entered the mainstream. The rock superstar Victor Tsoy, who played the protagonist, was the idol of the Soviet youth and his songs proclaimed a call to action: "Change! We want to change!" The film director not only declared the beginning of a new era but also declared a death sentence on the old times. The antipode of Moro is Spartak, who says: "I excuse my committee and I excuse myself!" The prophecy of an artist always astounds me. Rashid Nugmanov is a film director who thinks structurally and precisely. On one hand he was making a film for youth and therefore it had to speak the language of youth and describe the youth subculture. He cast Victor Tsoy and Petr Mamonov, the youth music idols, and gave his film the music video esthetic, with an atmosphere of irony and mockery. On the other hand he exactly recreated the change of the ideological paradigms by using soundtracks and music – songs of different periods, radio and television shows, and also by making artistic space decisions.

The visual esthetic of a film is a half the content of a film. Of course, the cinematographer Marat Nugamnov, brother of the film director, contributed to the visual style of the film. The film’s images of decay and emptiness serve as a manifestation of the disintegration of the Soviet Union. A continuous shot, panning along Dina’s apartment clogged with old useless stuff that used to belong to Dina’s father, says more than any words. The scene at the Aral Sea looks like a metaphor for the disintegrating Soviet Union – abandoned houses; the dried-out sea; ships stuck in the sand; a crewless boat.

Ermek Tursunov - Kelin (2009)

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/1628/kelinposter.png

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Bottom Line: Lyrical tale needs no words to convey an epic yet understated melodrama.

Betrayal, lust, murder and revenge unfold wordlessly and compellingly among the snows of the Kazakh Steppe in the directorial debut of journalist-screenwriter Ermek Tursunov. "Kelin" has the feel of an epic tale passed down the generations through oral tradition yet the director brilliantly turns this notion on its head by eliminating all dialogue and using very little music. He intelligently trusts audiences to grasp the universality of the story even when watching rituals and customs foreign to them.

The film's provenance and the fact that it is virtually silent (save the occasional grunts and the sounds of nature) almost certainly relegates it to just festivals. Yet it heralds the arrival of a new director from a virtually unknown part of the world, who is capable of marrying high production values with innovative storytelling and a surprisingly modern feel.

The film opens with the young, listless and beautiful Kelin (which actually means daughter-in-law) being prepared for her arranged wedding. Her true love has lost out to a richer suitor (who offered more silver coins and a bigger fur coat for her), but not before binding himself to her through a blood oath.

Adorned in sumptuous headgear and dress, Kelin is taken far away, on an ox, to her husband's house, to live with, presumably, his elderly mother and younger brother. Despite being forced into the marriage, she discovers that he is not such a bad catch after all, along with the joys of sex. Domestic bliss does not last long, however, as her first love comes looking for revenge, triggering a series of dramatic events.

Like with any epic tale of romance, audiences must give themselves over to it, which is easy to do in "Kelin." In Tursunov's capable hands this human melodrama is a visual and lyrical feast whose emotions are stripped to the very essence and are never overly sentimental.

Tursunov goes even further, giving the protagonist an active sexuality that after a while makes her no victim of her circumstances. Young and curious, she is simply caught in a remote, ancient community still very much governed by external forces and rites.

While the community is one few Westerners have ever heard of, Tursunov is sure that we will nevertheless recognize ourselves in it. And we do, in the impeccable cast whose silence speaks volumes and whose desires and actions are more than comprehensible. Even those rituals we do not immediately understand soon become clear in the story's context.

Cinematographer Murat Aliyev never treats the stunning snow-covered landscapes as folkloric postcards of a little-known region or people. On the contrary, he even extracts warmth from them, showing the characters' surroundings as bristling with life and color.

Darezhan Omirbayev - Kairat (1992)

http://j.imagehost.org/0566/Kairat2.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Kairat, the first feature film from „Kazakh new wave“ film director Darezhan Omirbaev, tells the story of a young man from a village in Kazakh steppe and his initiation into life in the big city.

KAIRAT
Darezhan Omirbaev, Kazakhstan, 1991; 72m
"This 34-year-old filmmaker has invented an entire universe," wrote Jean-Michel Frodon in Le Monde, and he was right. Darezhan Omirbaev may well have been inspired by Bresson and Hitchcock, but he has indeed created his very own universe in the five films he's made since the late 80s. The disconnected events of his films are simple - a boy travelling on a train from the steppe to the city, riding on a bus, going to a movie and brushing bare arms with his date, wandering through a train yard. But every form, every movement, every gesture seems to have found its precise poetic place, and the emotional terrain contained within his first feature feels as vast as an ocean. Kairat is the name of Omirbaev's autobiographically inspired hero, who moves through life exactly as many of us do when we're adolescents - awkwardly, in bewildered confusion, guarding a wealth of emotions deep within us like a buried treasure. One of the best films of the 90s.

Sergei Dvortsevoy - Tulpan (2008)

http://a.imagehost.org/0222/tulpan.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

by Roger Ebert

"Tulpan” is an amazing film. It shows such an unfamiliar world, it might as well be Mars. This is a place where the horizon is a straight line against the sky in every direction. There are no landmarks, no signs, no roads. No vegetation grows much more than a foot or two. It is dry, dusty, cold and windy, and nothing seems to be green. This is the world “Tulpan” takes place in, and I can think of only one other story that would feel at home there: “Waiting for Godot.”

Yet the people love it. They are yurt dwellers in Kazakhstan, the largest landlocked nation on Earth. They live on what is named in the credits as the Hungersteppe and raise sheep. We meet a young sailor named Asa, discharged from the Russian navy, who has come here to live with his sister Samal, her husband, Ondas, and their children. As the story opens, Asa, Ondas and his buddy Boni are negotiating with a poker-faced man and his hostile wife for the hand of their daughter, Tulpan (“Tulip”).
