Plot Synopsis by Nathan Southern

As directed by Polish film stalwart Lech Majewski in English, with a Hollywood cast including Viggo Mortensen (A Walk on the Moon) and Jack Kehoe (Melvin & Howard), the 1993 allegory The Gospel According to Harry unfolds at some indeterminate point in the future - when much of the Pacific Ocean is now a sandy, scorched and barren wasteland. Mortensen and Jennifer Rubin are Wes and Karen, a young couple trapped in the most unhealthy of relationships and bound by a co-dependency to one another. With only a bleak future in sight, the two go through empty and meaningless days searching for happiness with scarcely an iota of success. Then into the situation walks Harry, a tax collector who looks on as a distant observer but seems powerless to intervene on any level.

Quote:
THE KNIGHT (RYCERZ), 1980. Poland.
With Piotr Skarga, Daniel Olbrychski. A haunting, austere ballad about a knight’s quest for a gold-stringed harp whose sound is said to bring peace and harmony. The film’s imagery is inspired by medieval icons. 81 min.

London Film Festival
Los Angeles Film Festival

"A haunting, austere parable that has been directed with assurance by Lech Majewski who has a flair for starkly poetic compositions. His film retains its spare, arresting visual style throughout.” -- Janet Maslin, The New York Times

"Lech Majewski’s beautiful, mystical film, The Knight, has rich nightmarish images inspired by 13th century icons.”
-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times

Lech Majewski, a Polish artist who works internationally, is known for the films and videos he writes, directs, and shoots, and for his original scores. A graduate of the Lodz Film School, Majewski is also a poet, painter, and stage director celebrated for opera and theatrical events. His stylized moving-image works eschew language in favor of music and fantastically expressive landscapes, both domestic and topographical. His imaginative features are distinguished by a unique sensibility hovering not only between the absurd and the metaphysical, but also the beautiful and the profane. All films are written and directed by Majewski. In Polish with English subtitles unless otherwise noted.

Lech Majewski - The Garden of Earthly Delights (2004)

http://h.imagehost.org/0266/Garden_of.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Review from the Village Voice:
Images can be tyrannical things. In The Garden of Earthly Delights, faded videos trace the once vibrant presence of a lover. Chris (Chris Nightingale) obsessively replays the tapes containing his life with Claudia (Claudine Spiteri), finding himself imprisoned by the memories of former flesh. Adapting his own novel Metaphysics, director Lech Majewski edits these tapes together as bursts of remembrance, a collision of joyously tactile caresses from when the couple was vacationing in Venice. The film is given shape by their re-enactment of scenes from the titular Bosch painting after Claudia's cancer comes out of remission. There is magic in these intimate passion plays, which are filled with sloppy, loving detail and are mounted without a hint of pretension. Each banal moment becomes achingly gorgeous, not least because of Spiteri's disarmingly straightforward performance. The movie's philosophy is lucid and humane: Life is precious because it is short. True, but it gives no answer to the man who remains. All he has are shadows.

Art and sex. A little bit reminiscent of Greenaway, but without his penchant for hiding a smug obtuseness beneath an overtly mechanical plot. Beautiful and a fine example of what can be achieved with video.
