Mohsen Makhmalbaf - Sex & Philosophy (2005)

Plot summary from IMDB:
On his fortieth birthday, a man engineers a revolt against himself. He telephones his lovers -- all four of them -- and arranges to meet them at his dance school that afternoon. The women are shocked to discover that they have been sharing the affections of the same man. He arrives and tries to explain his actions. He has realized that time is limited for each of us. Total honesty is the only answer. One by one we review the beginning of each affair. The man and his lovers discuss passion, possession, time. How love blossoms from even the smallest seed. He gives each woman a parting gift -- a stopwatch -- and asks them to measure each minute of true love that they experience from now on. The women leave. The man is alone. Later, the fourth woman calls him and they arrange to meet at her house, where he finds the tables turned: he is now one of four lovers. Unable to handle the new situation, the men argue and depart. The man is left alone again....

Mohsen Makhmalbaf - Baykot AKA Boycott (1985)

Description: Valeh is an anti-Shah activist in pre-revolutionary Iran. He is constantly on the move, aware that he is being monitored by the Savak, the Shah's secret police. Eventually he is captured and tortured in prison. to extract inform- ation about his organisation. Meanwhile his comrades try to coerce him into dying for the cause. Valeh simply wants to live and be re-united with his wife and new baby. The director based the film on his own experiences as a leftist Islamic radical who became disillusioned with political activism and extremism of any kind.

Mohsen Makhmalbaf - Dastforoush AKA The Peddler (1987)

An impressive, often powerful Iranian feature (1987, 95 min.) by Mohsen Makhmalbaf--who started out as an antishah activist and fiction writer--composed of three sketches dealing with the poor in Tehran (1987). The first, freely adapted from an Alberto Moravia story, follows the appalling misadventures of an impoverished couple with four crippled children as they try to get their fifth and latest child adopted, in the hope that she won’t wind up crippled as well. The second follows the equally pathetic life of a scatterbrained, spastic Jerry Lewis type who devotes his life to caring for his aged and senile mother. (The couple from the first part reappear briefly in this episode.) The third part, shot in film noir style, is largely devoted to the grim fantasies of a clothes peddler who’s afraid of being killed by fellow traffickers. Each episode has a different cinematographer and all are shot very adroitly and fluidly, though the more self-conscious stylistics of the third part sit rather oddly with the first two episodes, which are often much closer to neorealism. According to Makhmalbaf, the film as a whole deals with the three stages of existence--birth, “journey through life,” and death. Critic Gerald Peary has compared the film to Rossellini’s Paisan, and it’s certainly true that the first episode is as wrenching as anything in that film or in Germany, Year Zero. "The wife of Nasim, an Afghan immigrant in Iran, is gravely ill. He needs money to pay for her care, but his day labor digging wells does not pay enough. A friend connects Nasim to a two-bit promoter who sells tickets to watch Nasim ride a bicycle continuously for a week. The promoter brings in sick and aged spectators, haranguing them to find hope in Nasim's strength. Aided by his son, who feeds him as he rides, Nasim grinds out the days and shivering nights. Local officials believe this may be a plot and Nasim may be a spy; they try to sabotage him as do those who bet he won't finish the week. Will desperation alone get Nasim the money? Is any triumph an illusion?"

Mohsen Makhmalbaf - Salaam Cinema (1995)

Synopsis:
Mohsen Makhmalbaf gives an advertisement in the newspapers and informs those who are interested in acting that in a test some of them would be chosen for making a movie on the occasion of the hundredth year of the birth of the Cinema. On due day a lot of people throng to the testing location and each person tries to get closer to the testing location. This eagerness turns into a flood and the crowd avulses the closed door that stops them from getting close to cinema. On the other side of the opened door each of the interested talk about their eagerness in front of the camera and in front of the table of a director, who evaluates their eagerness and talent with an autocratic representation. Each of them insists that the door of the cinema has to be opened and there should be a place for everyone to enter the world of cinema. In between them two 16-year old girls from a small city are more eager than the others and they are chosen among the others. The director gives his table of power to them so that they choose their own worthy generation themselves but as soon as these two girls sit behind the direction table they change the method and in a more difficult test, compared to the previous director, decide that most of the interested are not worthy of entering the cinema. When the director removes them from behind the table of power and tells them that this was a test as well, they once again experience the bitter taste of being a regular person.
