Nagisa Oshima - Ai no corrida aka In the Realm of the Senses [+Extras] (1976)

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p369/digikg/InTheRealmOfTheSensesPoster2a.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Based upon a true incident in 1930s Japan, Nagisa Oshima's controversial film effectively skirts the borderline between pornography and art -- making Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris of four years earlier look like children's programming in comparison. The story concerns servant and former prostitute Sada Abe (Eiko Matsuda) who becomes sexually obsessed with her employer Kizicho (Tatsuya Fuji), a businessman, after seeing him making love to his wife. After making love to Sada, Kizicho becomes obsessed with her as well. As their love-making becomes more and more intense, they find themselves unable to separate themselves from each other, until every waking hour is spent in more and more dangerous sexual acts with Sada becoming more and more of the aggressor. Finally, for the ultimate in eroticism, Kizicho agrees to be strangled during sexual ecstasy for the ultimate in orgasmic fulfillment.

Nagisa Oshima - Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (1983)

http://divxplanet.com/local_photos/3875/Merry-Christmas-Mr-Lawrence-876694.jpg

Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence unites rock legend David Bowie and the inimitable actor-director Takeshi ‘Beat’ Kitano (Zatoichi) in an intense social drama set in a Japanese Prisoner of War camp during World War II.

When British soldier Jack Celliers (David Bowie) arrives at the PoW camp in Java starved and tortured, his arrival disrupts the delicate social structure of the camp and incites both admiration and distrust. The Japanese find it difficult to understand why the prisoners in their camp would have surrendered instead of killing themselves to retain their honour. Caught between the divided factions is liaison officer John Lawrence (Tom Conti), the only person in the camp to speak both English and Japanese, who struggles to help each side understand one another. Captain Yanoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto), the idealistic commandant who runs the camp, shows an unusual amount of interest in Jack and the relationship between them is fraught with sexual tension. Similarly, guard sergeant Gengo Hara (Takeshi Kitano) finds it difficult to accept the growing friendship between himself and Lawrence.

Directed by Japanese auteur Nagisa Oshima (In the Realm of the Senses ) and produced by Jeremy Thomas (The Dreamers, The Last Emperor), Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence was originally released in 1983 and remains a riveting exploration of racism, brutality and the sparks that fly when cultures collide.

Lush, daring and emotionally involving. ****

Nagisa Oshima - Gishiki aka The Ceremony (1971)

http://i.imagehost.org/0447/CEREMONY_20JP.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: Sweeping the Kinema Junpo awards in 1972 (best actor (Sato Kei), best director, best film, and best screenplay), Oshima Nagisa's The Ceremony is a fascinating study of Japan's war and post-war period, as seen through the eyes of a young man from an influential family. The Ceremony is known to be Oshima's most autobiographical work, as he was raised during the same time period, under similar situations, and was descended from the powerful samurai class.

Nagisa Oshima - Seishun Zankoku Monogatari AKA Cruel Story of Youth (1960)

http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/102/contescruel.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Nagisa Oshima's groundbreaking film opens with young, attractive Mako and her friend hitching a ride from an old man. After her friend leaves, the man tries to rape her, and she is saved only by the handsome Kiyoshi. Later, against the background of the tumultuous 1960 U.S./Japan Security Treaty demonstrations, Kiyoshi and Mako walk along a grungy seaside lumberyard while talking about sex. He attempts to kiss her, she slaps him, and he throws her in the water. She cries out that she can't swim. When she continues to refuse his advances, he steps on her fingers as she clings to a log. Kiyoshi then saves Mako from a trio of seedy pimps looking to impress her into working for them, but after rescuing her, he forces himself on her again. With this unlikely beginning, Kiyoshi and Mako form a passionate though doomed romance. Soon she stops going to school and moves into his flea-ridden dive of an apartment. Utterly disillusioned with all trappings of societal convention, the two get cash by blackmailing businessmen and by shaking down Kiyoshi's middle-aged sugarmama. Tension with this Bonnie and Clyde duo builds after Mako has an abortion in a run down clinic, performed by an alcoholic doctor. (Allmovie)

Nagisa Oshima - Etsuraku AKA Pleasure of the Flesh (1965)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description:
Director Nagisa Oshima's film uses the "pink" genre to mask an allegory about the materialism of post-war Japan (the original title translates as "Indulgence"). Katsuo Nakamura stars as a man blackmailed by a thief, who makes him hold on to some stolen loot while the thief serves a jail sentence. Nakamura is led into temptation by all that money sitting around, so he decides to spend it on wild partying and sex before killing himself to avoid retribution. Like the films of Paul Morrissey, Etsuraku simultaneously exploits its subject matter and condemns it, to peculiar effect

Nagisa Oshima - Ai to kibo no machi AKA A Street of Love and Hope (1959)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: Before being raised to the level of full director by his employer Shochiku Ofuna Studios, Oshima Nagisa worked as an assistant director assisting in the making of program pictures which, at the time, dominated Japanese theater screens. These films were quite formulaic, but they were popular amongst the mass Japanese audience. These films were generally divided up into certain genres, comedies, period dramas, etc., and then into certain age groups. The directors of these films primarily stuck to a certain method of film making and they were supposed to indoctrinate their assistants into the same system.

There were of course some directors who disliked this system, so they tried to bring new life to program pictures by using new camera techniques and such, but for the most part their efforts were ignored by their producers and film critics, so, instead of continuing to go against the grain, they allowed themselves to go along with the system and direct complete schlock. However, some directors such as Masumura Yasuzo and Nakahira Ko changed many aspects of film with their early works, especially with Kisses and Crazed Fruit, and many young assistant directors began to take notice. One of these young directors was, of course, Oshima Nagisa.

Although an assistant director, Oshima assisted on only around fifteen films during his five years in the position. Instead, Oshima used his time to write screenplays and film criticism. In one essay, Oshima attacked his employer while lauding the films of other studios. The president of Shochiku, obviously aware of the fall of ticket sells for domestic films because of television and foreign films, primarily American films, turned Ofuna studios into a home for promising young directors and Oshima was given first shot to make a new type of film.

The film Oshima made was originally titled The Boy Who Sold is Pigeon, but the producers changed the films title to Street of Love and Hope, , against Oshima's wishes. The film focuses on a young man named Masuo whose father has passed away, whose mother is sick, and whose sister is mildly retarded. In order to make ends meet, Masuo works at his mother's shoeshine booth and also sells his sister's pet pigeons. It would of course seem that selling the pigeons would be a one time thing, but since the birds are homing pigeons they return to Masuo and then he is able to sell them again.

Trying to make ends meet this way, Masuo also receives help from his teacher who is trying to land him a good job and he also falls under the wing of Kyoko, an older student whose heart is touched after Masuo sells his pigeons to her. However, after his scam is revealed, can these feelings truly remain the same?

Street of Love and Hope received little press from its studio upon its release and was primarily shown in small theaters, but critics soon latched onto it and viewed Oshima as being similar to Jean-Luc Goddard and Francois Truffaut in France who were ushering in the French New Wave with their stellar films Breathless and 400 Blows. Oshima was never comfortable being labeled as New Wave and he stated that the Japanese New Wave movement was not truly a New Wave movement because the directors were still shackled to the large studios. Yet, there was definitely something new in the air and this short film would be the first to bring a new type of filmmaking to Japan. -- Amazon.com
