Festival cause célèbre Ole Christian Madsen -- the director of critically championed prior efforts including Kira's Reason (2001) and Prague (2006) -- turns away from the domestic drama that characterized his earlier filmography with this unusual period thriller, adapted from historical events. Thure Lindhardt and Mads Mikkelsen star, respectively, as Flame and Citron. As two members of the anti-Nazi Danish resistance during the Second World War, their activities predominantly consist of hunting down and rubbing out Denmark's most prominent Nazi collaborators, and thus furthering the way for the Allied cause. Although Madsen opts for conventional subject matter here, and even a traditional perspective given his film's anti-Nazi stance, his deglamorized presentation retains a certain uniqueness, with the two main characters presented not as conventional heroes, but thoroughly desperate characters from the dregs of society with nothing left to lose except for their own lives -- and sociopaths prone to the most sadistic acts of ultraviolence against the enemy. Citron fares worst, as an utterly irredeemable alcoholic and drug addict, crumbling beneath the weight of a miserable, rotten marriage and a less-than-glowing relationship with his young daughter. In touting the film, Madsen openly cited Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows (1969) as one of his key influences.

Ole Christian Madsen - Prag AKA Prague (2006)

TWITCH REVIEW:
The latest film from Danish director Ole Christian Madsen - whose previous film, "Nordkraft" got rather a lot of play around here - finds the director further cementing his reputation for chronicling failed, failing and hopeless relationships. With "Prague" he pulls back the stylistic flourishes of "Nordkraft" to focus on a pivotal weekend in the lives of Christoffer and Maja, a middle aged Danish couple travelling to Prague to collect the body of the father who abandoned Christoffer when he was only twelve.

Madsen works hand in hand here with actors Stine Stengade and Mads Mikkelsen, both of whom turn in powerfully realistic performances as the married couple slowly stripping away the facade of their relationship. Things begin pleasantly enough with the two appearing much like any other couple but it isn't long before Christoffer informs his wife that he knows that she is having an affair and this is where the real meat of the film begins, the layers of denial slowly being stripped away to reveal what lies beneath.

Stengade is excellent as the unfaithful wife, simply desperate for a little attention, but it is Mikkelsen who carries the film, perfectly capturing a man caught between anger, shame, and the desperate urge to somehow impossibly make things right and continue with life as it has always been. He is a man seeing his life crumble on multiple fronts, forced to deal with being discarded by his wife and mother of his child in the present while also being forced to accept the long past abandonment of his father, and the conflicting forces seething beneath his stoic exterior are positively tangible.

Madsen is resolute in his approach here, there are no easy answers, no simple resolution, no false hopes offered. He is setting out to capture a relationship in its final stage, the emotional rupture finally bursting into undeniable view, and he does just that. His script is sharp and insightful, the dialogue and performances uncannily accurate, the edit lean and energetic. And while "Prague" shows Madsen in a more restrained mode than did "Nordkraft" it is still abundantly clear that this is a man who knows his way around the camera. He also shows a surprisingly strong sense of humor, injecting small bursts of absurdity that reinforce the emotional isolation of the characters in this foreign land while also relieving the tension in what could otherwise have been an emotionally oppressive piece. The surly waiter, the hugging nurses, the lawyer who insists on standing for undisclosed reasons, the repeated confusion of beer and coffee whenever Christoffer orders at a bar, they all inject moments of humor into the film while also staying true to the world and themes of the film.

Challenging with superb performances, intelligent writing and just the right amount of flash, Prague is a truly rewarding experience. Very highly recommended.

Ole Christian Madsen - Kærlighedshistorie AKA Kira's Reason: A Love Story (2001)

The 21st film to receive official Dogme certification, and one of the few unharmed by its minimalist limitations, Ole Christian Madsen's powerful Kira's Reason: A Love Story could be the undercard to A Woman Under The Influence, John Cassavetes' seminal study of a marriage and mental illness. Beginning with a wife's return home after time in a psychiatric ward, both films gain their tension from the strained attempt to return to normalcy after everything has irrevocably changed, a transitional phase made all the more painful by brief flashes of the couple's old dynamic. Though Madsen's middle-class heroes have little in common with Cassavetes' more combative blue-collar counterparts, their reunion is similarly raw, painful, and unexpectedly romantic, as they try to redefine their relationship around a new set of terms. Looking and acting uncannily like a young Genevieve Bujold, Stine Stengade gives a touchingly unhinged performance as the title character, a madwoman who tries to find her footing as a wife and mother after being committed for an unspecified condition. While she was away, her husband Lars Mikkelsen had an affair with her sister, but he seems genuinely willing to grant her every opportunity to reenter their lives. Though she works hard to keep up appearances, Stengade's mood swings throw her so far off-balance that even her ecstatic moments are temporary and disturbingly artificial, a hairsbreadth away from collapse. Mikkelsen strenuously professes his love for her and tries to remain patient, but her erratic behavior–highlighted by a breakdown at a public pool and a one-night stand with a random barfly–begins to wear him down. In a desperate gesture, he allows her to make the arrangements for an elaborate business dinner at a luxury hotel, an event that serves as the ultimate test of her withered sanity. The tortured interplay between Stengade and Mikkelsen lies at the heart of Kira's Reason, but Madsen errs by grabbing for simple explanations for her madness elsewhere, such as the father (Sven Wollter) who abandoned her during childhood or a tragic revelation buried in the third act. Why give the game away when the actors suggest their characters' inner workings with such delicacy and precision? Until its pat, implausible conclusion, the film has the edgy nerve of a classic amour fou, charting a complex relationship with the sort of bumpy, unpredictable spirit that would do Cassavetes proud.
