Otto Preminger - Anatomy of a Murder (1959)

Based on the best-selling novel by Robert Traver (the pseudonym for Michigan Supreme Court justice John D. Voelker), Anatomy of a Murder stars James Stewart as seat-of-the-pants Michigan lawyer Paul Biegler. Through the intervention of his alcoholic mentor Parnell McCarthy (Arthur O'Connell), Biegler accepts the case of one Lt. Manion Ben Gazzara), an unlovable lout who has murdered a local bar owner. Manion admits that he committed the crime, citing as his motive the victim's rape of the alluring Mrs. Manion (Lee Remick). Faced with the formidable opposition of big-city prosecutor Claude Dancer (George C. Scott), Biegler hopes to win freedom for his client by using as his defense the argument of "irresistible impulse." Also featured in the cast is Eve Arden as Biegler's sardonic secretary, Katherine Grant as the woman who inherits the dead man's business (and provides the key piece of evidence near the end of the trial), and Joseph N. Welch — who in real life was the defense attorney in the Army-McCarthy hearings — as the ever-patient judge. The progressive-jazz musical score is provided by Duke Ellington, who also appears in a brief scene. Producer/director Otto Preminger once more pushed the envelope in Anatomy of a Murder by utilizing technical terminology referring to sexual penetration, which up until 1959 was a cinematic no-no. Contrary to popular belief, Preminger was not merely being faithful to the novel; most of the banter about "panties" and "semen," not to mention the eleventh-hour courtroom revelation, was invented for the film. In this compelling and unusual psychological melodrama Ann Sutton (Gene Tierney), a woman tormented by her secret kleptomania seeks help from a unscrupulous hypnotist David Korvo (Jose Ferrer). Although she is married to a successful psychiatrist Richard (Robert Conte), and has no need to steal the items which she could easily purchase, she finds herself powerless to control her urge. She is finally caught when she attempts to steal a brooch from a department store but she is saved by Korvo who persuades the store not to prosecute. Grateful and desperate for help, Ann allows Korvo to treat her. Korvo, taking advantage of Ann's vulnerability, hypnotizes her and sends her to the home of a former mistress whom he has stolen money from and subsequently murdered when she threatened to turn him in to the police. Ann is charged with the murder. Convinced of his wife's innocence, Richard must crack Korvo's seeming airtight alibi. Richard tricks Korvo into returning to the scene of the crime to find some evidence in the exciting conclusion. Despite the involvement of director Otto Preminger and co-writer Ben Hecht, "Whirlpool" can't help but come off as a sporadically trashy, thoroughly absurd murder mystery. Gene Tierney stars as Ann Sutton, a wealthy socialite who - in the film's opening moments - is caught stealing a pendant she could easily afford. Thanks to the efforts of a charming doctor named David Korvo (Jose Ferrer), the store's owner is convinced not to press charged. As it turns out, Korvo's got his own reasons for wanting Ann to go free and essentially blackmails the woman into accepting an aggressive round of hypnotherapy. Tierney and Ferrer are exceedingly convincing in their respective roles (particularly Ferrer, who steps into the shoes of this sinister hypnotist with apparent ease), while Preminger effectively infuses the film with random bursts of style. And though the movie becomes incredibly ridiculous as it progresses (there's a twist towards the end that's just about laughable), Hecht - along with Andrew Solt - does a nice job of imbuing Whirlpool with snappy dialogue and a relatively quick pace. But the whole thing is far too silly to ever be taken seriously, though it does seem as though that might've been the point.

Synopsis:

The attack on Pearl Harbor brings war to the U.S. Navy, and cues the varied destinies of an epic-full of colorful characters. Captain Rockwell Torrey (John Wayne) has the good fortune to be out of port when the raid begins. While Commander Kimmell (Franchot Tone) takes the fall for the loss of the fleet, Torrey hangs on, and with the help of Commander Egan Powell (Burgess Meredith), a screenwriter-turned intelligence man, and friendly nurse Lieutenant Maggie Hayes (Patricia Neal), he weathers the post-Pearl career storm to become one of the key fleet commanders in the South Pacific campaign under Admiral Nimitz (Henry Fonda). Battling the Japanese and weathering enough subplots to float a battleship, Torrey's island-hopping campaign races toward a head-on naval clash with the enemy fleet.

Plot
Produced and directed by Otto Preminger, Exodus is a 212-minute screen adaptation of the best-selling novel by Leon Uris. The film is concerned with the emergence of Israel as an independent nation in 1947. Its first half focuses on the efforts of 611 holocaust survivors to defy the blockade of the occupying British government and sail to Palestine on the sea vessel Exodus. Paul Newman, a leader of the Hagannah (the Jewish underground), is willing to sacrifice his own life and the lives of the refugees rather than be turned back to war-ravaged Europe, but the British finally relent and allow the Exodus safe passage. Otto Preminger - The Human Factor (1979)

Description: Otto Preminger’s final feature is a restrained but well crafted espionage thriller based on a novel by Graham Greene, adapted for the screen by Tom Stoppard. Preminger's direction tends to lack verve and tension, removing what should be the human factor of a moral dilemma of loyalty. The cast includes Richard Attenborough, Derek Jacobi, John Gielgud, Ann Todd and Iman, but it's Robert Morley who stands out from the crowd as a ruthless doctor. The convoluted and underdeveloped plot hinges on tacit Cold War approval for the apartheid regime in South Africa.
A low-ranking worker in the African section of the Foreign Office is acquiescent in supplying relatively unimportant information to the Eastern Bloc. Lowly Secret Service desk clerk Castle (Nicol Williamson) is accused of leaking information to the Russians due to his wife (Iman) being smuggled out of Apartheid-era South African by a Communist friend, but suspicion also falls on his unmarried office colleague Davis (Derek Jacobi). Their bosses, Tomlinson and Percival (John Gielgud and Robert Morley), prepare a lethal mixture for the mole, and its Colonel Daintry’s (Richard Attenborough) task to point the finger.When a South African official (Joop Doderer) pays a visit to Britain to work on a new project, secrets begin to unravel and lives are changed forever.
My rip from the French dvd. English audio with French .srt subs alongside. Neither a great film nor a terrible one, but I enjoyed the book as a kid and recently looked for the film. Rather than a thriller, I'd say that this was more of an enjoyer. Revel at Bowie's missus' great acting.

Otto Preminger - Daisy Kenyon (1947)

Daisy Kenyon stars Joan Crawford as the eponymous heroine, a Manhattan commercial artist. Daisy is torn between two men: a handsome, married attorney (Dana Andrews) and an unmarried Henry Fonda. Deciding to do the "right thing", Daisy marries Fonda, but carries a torch for the dashing Andrews. When the lawyer divorces his wife, he calls upon Daisy and tries to win her back. She is very nearly won over, but her husband isn't about to give up so easily. Both men argue over Daisy, who is so distraught by the experience that she nearly has a fatal automobile accident. In the end, Daisy realizes that she truly loves Fonda, and gives Andrews his walking papers. Daisy Kenyon is given a contemporary slant with a subplot about child abuse (in a Joan Crawford film!); and, in one scene set at New York's Stork Club, several celebrities (Walter Winchell, Leonard Lyons, John Garfield) make unbilled cameo appearances.
