Apichatpong Weerasethakul - Loong Boonmee raleuk chat AKA Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Quote:
Confession: my only previous exposure to Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the Thai director who's one of the most lauded auteurs currently working, was a DVD copy of Tropical Malady, which frankly bored my pants off. Watching Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives on the big screen at the New York Film Festival's Alice Tully Hall, it occurred to me almost immediately that waiting to see anything by Weerasethakul on DVD is a terrible idea. For Uncle Boonmee, the large theater screen works like a window onto a bigger world populated by larger-than-actual-size memories and myths. And the photography is not the kind of crisp, high-contrast work that translates well to home video (though Blu-ray might do OK by it) — shots taken within the Thai jungle, for instance, are unfailingly dense and moody, with different and ever-darker shades of green layered on top of each other like thick brush strokes in an oil painting. Sometimes it feels as if the whole film were shot at twilight, or using day-for-night shooting and processing trickery.

When one of Weerasethakul's rare bright daylight exteriors hits the screen, you feel it like waking up at noon.Uncle Boonmee has a spooky, dreamlike quality that benefits from a directorial style that could best be described as languorous. Weerasethakul likes to hold shots for a long time — though not an absurdly long time — so that we can process, for instance, the face of the film's co-star Jenjira Pongpas after her character, Jen, rolls down a car window so she can catch the breeze across her face as she travels outside of the city to be with her brother-in-law, Boonmee (Thanapat Saisaymar). Her expression becomes a brief mystery story. What can we read there — anticipation? Trepidation? I thought it was a somewhat anxious look, not entirely without optimism but far from contented.

My feeling on that front was confirmed, maybe, when Weerasethakul revealed that the aging Boonmee is dying of kidney failure. He can still supervise work on his tamarind trees and unusually tasty honey crop, but his condition requires constant attention from caretakers, who drain and refill him, like so much rickety plumbing, through plastic tubes that enter the soft flesh of his gut. The first scene showing Boonmee undergoing this particular routine is another one of the director's long takes, and it's both a gentle and terrible look at encroaching mortality. Boonmee makes a point at dinner of adhering to a doctor-ordered diet, but it's no use. He's on the way down, and he knows it.

Uncle Boonmee is less a case study in death by degrees than it is a kind of supernatural fable, or, more specifically, a magical and baffling tone poem on the idea of reincarnation. Beyond its provocative title, the film is none too explicit in that regard. It introduces itself with a brief episode featuring a wayward buffalo (and something else, more sinister looking, out there in the jungle), which raises the question for any halfway attentive viewer: is that one of Uncle Boonmee's past lives? How about the story of the princess and the catfish, a masterful digression that hijacks the narrative partway through, then returns us to the deathwatch? Is he the woman or the fish? And what to make of that cave in the wilderness where Boonmee is taken in his final hours? Shiny minerals sparkle in the dark stone ceilings there, like stars in the night sky, and he says it feels like a womb, that it's the site of his first birth.

Even after the last of Boonmee's life has trickled out, his story isn't over, and Weerasethakul appends a mesmerizing coda that has something to do with Thai politics, Buddhism, and parallel universes. At the first NYFF public screening, Weerasethakul recalled with amusement an earlier press conference during which a critic asked him, “What does this film have to do with quantum physics?” It's not easy to parse the intended meaning(s) of Uncle Boonmee Who Recalls His Past Lives, but you get the sense that a viewer's confusion is itself part of the author's intent. Whatever else Weerasethakul believes about past lives, we don't need to know it.

There's another sense in which Western audiences are truly alienated from this film. Weerasethakul said it's meant in part as homage to Thai films of his youth, telling the NYFF audience that each of the film's six reels, which are all roughly 20 minutes in length, was constructed as a tribute to a different style of native Thai filmmaking. For my part, I feel like he got a lot of mileage out of this strategy — just as I would start to feel a little impatient with the pace of Weerasethakul's storytelling, my thoughts wandering and my ass shifting in my chair, he'd change it up completely. And the 20 minutes we spend with the princess, who pauses to take in her own reflection in the water and then begins to weep with her back to the camera, the gorgeous cascades of a waterfall in the background of the frame functioning as an avatar of her tears, is as fine a stretch of cinema as I've seen in years. This is a sometimes taxing but altogether remarkable film.---------From Deep Focus

Nithiwat Tharathorn - Dear Galileo (2009)

http://i41.tinypic.com/333b9yu.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: A story of two Thai girls nicknamed Cherry and Noon who plan to backpack to Europe for a year. They took off for reasons totally understandable for most teenagers, but unfathomable to adults.
“One is suspended from university while another one is heart broken.” Their plan was very simple: get a student visa to take an English course, but their true motivation is to save money, travel, and experience the world. The destinations were the ‘Big Three’ of Europe – London, Paris, and Rome. Before they took this trip, they swore: #1. No matter what happens, not to leave each other. #2. To never break rule #1 However, as we all know never say “never” when it comes to life being that you will “never” know what might happen.

How did the father of modern science like Galileo come to be identified with a Thai film?
One might think that Dear Galileo is a sci-fi or a comedy. Instead, it is a coming-of-age pic of two girls experience their lives in a new surrounding. After despairs with their Bangkok lives, Noon and Cherry escape the Asia city for a year and travel to the “Big Three of Europe” - London, Paris, and Venice. Noon is heartbroken; Cherry is suspended from university for forging a professor’s signature. Across the continents, they struggle the hardship as illegal workers and find the true meaning of their lives and friendship. They swear to each other that no matter what happens, they will not leave each other.
Is Dear Galileo then a film about friendship between the two girls? Partly. When the film was released in Bangkok, the studio's publicist tried to elaborate on the fun and difficulties in which the crew encountered during the shooting. Nice lines and plots also attracted some ex-actors to take a part in the film. Dear Galileo is liked by many young generations as a liberal film. It is something that they want to do and follow. It is a female version of modern Rebel Without A Cause.

Indeed, Dear Galileo occupies several smart plots and sharp lines in the eyes of contemporary young Thais, though they might not be new for western audiences. These include scenes in which a group of foreigners living in a public shelter in Paris without electricity and water, a girl fighting with her demanding customer to accept what she has served her, a girl securing a good job without completing her study, and a girl living in Italy while having cheated Italian people. They all look cool! All of these things have rarely been portrayed in contemporary Thai cinema.
Director Nithiwat keeps every mise-en-scène under his meticulous control and the umbrella of enjoyment. Music is good and realistic. The real song that overseas Thais often sing to get over their homesick, was used. Cinematography is nice and subtle. Acting is almost perfect. Some of the actors themselves have spent time abroad. For example, Rey MacDonal as the liberal Thai man in Paris is himself a host of a television tourism documentary. One of his programs featured a train trip from Bangkok to London. And the two lead actors - the heartbroken Noon and the smart but stubborn Cherry nicely show their opposite chemistry of the good and the bad. At the end, it is the movie with plenty of laughter and good feelings.
Perhaps as there are too many good lines and cool plots, the writers tried to include and mix everything in one film - and then make the film loss of focuses. Sometimes, it is about the hardship of Thai lives oversea. Some others are about the philosophy of lives. And then friendship. Homesick. Thai style of living, and etc. Dear Galileo becomes a film of massive feel-good. Many lines and philosophy can only be touched at the rim, but hard to be appreciated in depth.
However, if you want to see how Thai overseas live with fun, laugh and meaningful - this is the first movie that will best clarify it.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul - Sang sattawat aka Syndromes And A Century (2006)

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk75/otr2damascus/617axco2kjldz6.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Quote:
An impressionistic diary of his doctor parents' courtship, director Apichatpong Weerasethakul's picture evolves in two parts (feminine/masculine?), with events repeated in each against opposing backdrops: natural/rural vs. industrial/urban. Its suggestion of autobiography (the parents' memories are the stated structure, such as it is) tantalizes like the title of an Ezra Pound poem--an external prod just as, Weerasethakul suggests, all of our reactions to film are essentially personal and intrinsically separate from the film itself. That doesn't stop it from being oblique, however, as unconcerned with narrative sense as it is with texture. There's the thought in here that the past is Narcissus' pool, a reflection of the dark present: we never seem to learn from the past, but dip too long and it ossifies any illusion of progress.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul - Dokfa nai meuman AKA Mysterious Object at Noon (2000)

http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/2482/mysteriouscover.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

An adventurous experiment in cinematic storytelling, this low-budget independent Thai feature is structured like the Surrealist idea of the "exquisite corpse." One person begins a story, and a succession of others continue it in whatever way they see fit. Director Apichatpong Weerasethakul gleans his participants from all over the Thai countryside. The story, begun by a young woman with a personal history harrowing enough for its own movie, concerns a wheelchair-bound boy and his enigmatic tutor Dogfar. As the tale is passed along between a variety of rural characters (including, at one point, a traveling dance troupe who perform it for an audience), everything from kidnappings to space aliens are added to the mix. The film alternates between the storytellers and the story they tell, along with "behind the scenes" shots and other documentary footage that blur the line between fiction and non-fiction and make the film itself a witty, quirky exploration of the very notion of storytelling. -- Tom Vick. Piraphan Laoyont - Suay Laak Sai AKA Sick Nurses (2007)

http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll164/Rubenunsi/sicknurses1.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: In an operating theater with cocktail lounge lighting, handsome Dr. Tah and six fetching nurses are engaged in supplying cadavers to bodyparts traders. Victim snuffed out in opening set piece is one of their own, Tahwan, who threatened to squeal after discovering her sister Nook had also caught the doc's roving eye. 7 days later, the green-skinned ghost of Tahwan is preparing to fulfill local superstitions about the dead returning to claim their lovers. First on agenda is settling the score with her bitchy sisters-in-crime, all of whom meet ghastly ends related to obsessions with body image and materialism. Offings include death by handbag, and a particularly bloody end with surgical saws for lesbian twins Am and Orn.
This is a rather twisted and weird variation on topics and images familiar from J-horror films.
