Mertkan has a simple life in Istanbul: 'working' as an office-boy in his dad's construction company, hanging out with his male friends in malls and discos, cruising with his dad's 4-wheel drive at night. There is no urgency for him to find a meaning to this emptiness. When he meets Gul, a Kurdish girl from Eastern Turkey, putting herself through university by working as a waitress, Mertkan has a chance to change the futility of his life. But his father opposes his connection with 'those people who only want to divide our country' and reminds Mertkan that 'we are all Turkish and we are all Muslims'. Insidiously Mertkan bows to the social values of the 'Majority' when faced with a choice, and becomes the 'proper man' his dad wanted him to be. (IMDb)

You might remember actor Aytekin Akkaya from Turkish Star Wars. Here he rises to the spotlight as the heroic lead. In a heart-wrenching performance, Akkaya conveys with an unnerving subtlety the true spirit of a Captain America who is both Turkish and lacking in shield. While the sinister Spider-Man is busy strangling women to death in the shower and putting rats down tubes to eat his captives’ faces off, Captain Turkish America recruits Mexico’s national superhero, Santo, to aid him in his quest to rid Turkey of the webbed menace once and for all. Santo’s a gimp-masked superhero who’s also a wrestler. You almost wish Spidey had a mask like that though, so you wouldn’t have to see his truly Turkish eyebrows.

This dynamic directorial debut does for Istanbul what Scorsese did for Little Italy: It takes an intimate and inventive shooting style and combines it with an authentic ear for that city’s slang to tell the story of two friends who get into deep trouble in a chaotic underground scene. For 15 years, director Mehmet Bahadir Er lived in the neighborhood where Black Dogs Barking is set, and he uses that experience to bring a tremendous realism to the film.

Yilmaz Güney - Aç kurtlar AKA The Hungry Wolves (1969)

synopsis with spoilers:
Serçe Mehmet had been a teacher in a village near Siirt in South-East Anatolia. Bandits had kidnapped his wife, after seven months they returned her dead body, she had committed suicide out of shame. Mehmet then decided to leave the village and to devote the rest of his life to hunting bandits down. Here the film sets in.

In another village, bandits force the villagers to pay them large sums of money, threatening the villagers by killing some of the men and abducting some of the women. Serçe Mehmet arrives, kills several of the bandits, giving himself the name "Azrail". Everybody is afraid of him because of his reputation as a merciless killer.

He frees however a woman who had just been raped. Mehmet takes her back to the village, but her husband, also a teacher, doesn´t want to have her back. The woman implores Mehmet to shoot her, he answers that he will not waste a bullet on her if she doesn´t pay for it first. Since she has no money she collapses in the snow, then she follows Mehmet at a distance. Mehmet helps her after all and even convinces the husband to take her back. (Another woman is raped by the bandits, her husband is forced to sit in the next room, after the bandits have left, he hands her a revolver with which she shoots herself.)

Serçe Mehmet finishes off the bandits one after another and regularly visits the village inn bringing in their heads and crossing off their names from a wanted-list. In a final show-down in the mountains deep in snow, he awaits them, they surround him but are no match for him. (Their dead bodies are eaten by wolves in the night and discovered by the surviving bandits in the morning.) Finally a commando of gendarmes arrive and surround the shed Mehmet has hidden himself in. He pours himself a last glass of Rakı and prepares himself to die in the flames, as the gendarmes throw petrol over the shed. The flames also consume the patriotic, progress-praising posters on the walls.

Reha Erdem - Kosmos (2010)

Kosmos is a thief who works miracles. He arrives in this timeless border town from the wilds weeping, as though a fugitive. No sooner is he there than he rescues a small boy from drowning in the river, and is recognized as a man who works miracles.

Kosmos, is a rather uncommon person. He never appears to eat nor sleep. His single form of nourishment is the granulated or lump sugar he consumes by the fistful. One of his more striking skills is the ability to scale the tallest trees with uncommon agility. He is also frank in declaring his wish that startles the townspeople: He is looking for love. Soon Kosmos and Neptun, the teenager sister of the rescued boy, grow closer in the most bizarre of ways: imitating the screech of birds in trees and on rooftops.

Director REHA ERDEM

Born in Istanbul in 1960, Reha Erdem graduated from Cinema Department to Paris University. He received his M.A. in Plastic Arts from the same university. He shot his first feature-length film Oh Moon (A Ay) in 1989 as a French-Turkish co-production. He shot Run for Money (Kac Para Kac) in 1999, Mommy, I'm Scared (Korkuyorum Anne) in 2004, Times and Winds (Bes Vakit) in 2006, My Only Sunshine (Hayat Var) in 2008 and Kosmos in 2009. He wrote all of his films except for Mommy I'm Scared, for which he was one of the co-writers. He also has short films and directed a theater play, Maids (Les Bonnes) by Jean Genet.
