Zhang Ke Jia - Wuyong AKA Useless (2007)

Award-winning Sixth Generation director Jia Zhangke's 2007 documentary Useless weaves a three-part tale about the Chinese clothing industry. The documentary opens in the textile factories of Guangdong, where workers hunch over massive machines day in day out for low pay, before moving to Paris where fashion designer Ma Ke is unveiling her new collection of organic, avant-garde, haute couture designs. Running counter to the clothing industry's culture of mass production and reproduction, her new line "Wu Yong", meaning "Useless", lends the film its title, and forms the heart of the documentary. The third act of the film travels to a tailor shop in a dusty mining town in Shanxi. Using a down-to-earth montage of people and places, Useless brings out the significance of clothing, and the different faces and sectors of modern China.

Zhang Ke Jia - Dong (2006)

Still Life’s nonfiction companion piece, Dong chronicles Jia's artist friend Liu Xiaodong's travels to the Three Gorges and Bangkok to paint local construction workers and a group of Thai women on canvas.

Zhang Ke Jia - Ren xiao yao aka Unknown Pleasures (2002)

Named one of the top two films of 2003 by critic J. Hoberman, Unknown Pleasures places the rebel-youth genre in the milieu of China’s then unseen "birth control generation", teens born in the early eighties and raised in an age when Tarantino has become the new Mao and China is looking for a way into the global economy. The television is showing China’s Olympic bid and participation in the WTO, but unemployed buddies Xiao Ji (Wu Qiong) and Bin Bin (Zhao Weiwei) can’t see much future beyond their backwater northern mining town, where karaoke bars, pirate DVDs, and random bombings offer the only breaks from monotony. A chance meeting with hot-wired singer Qiao Qiao (Zhao Tao) finally awakens Xiao Ji, but circumstance (and her businessman/mobster lover) may prove too difficult to overcome. A sympathetic, impressionistic portrait of youth so alienated that they’ve nothing to rebel against, much less for, Unknown Pleasures is "“as true a picture of contemporary existence as we could hope for now" (Kent Jones, Film Comment).

Zhang Ke Jia - Sanxia haoren AKA Still Life (2006)

Mainland Chinese director Jia Zhangke's Still Life (aka Sanxia Haoren), a last minute entry into the 2006 Venice Film Festival, eventually won the Golden Lion award thanks to its top-notch cinematography and wonderful storytelling. Still Life interweaves the story of a miner (Han Sanming) who travels thousands of miles to a town near the Yangtze River to look for his ex-wife and a nurse fetching her husband who has been working at the river without sending a single word home. While the film does not let these two characters cross paths, together they reflect changes in people's lives brought by the Three Gorges Dam, which flooded villages near the Yangtze River and led to the emergence of some new settlements. Already acclaimed for his earlier works, most of which also star Han Sanming and Zhao Tao, Jia is probaby the best known Sixth Generation director. With Still Life, he continues his probing grassroots studies of Chinese life.
Jia's previous acclaimed titles Platform (2000) and The World (2004) also competed at the Venice Film Festival. He has also set a record for Chinese directors by having two films selected for the Venice Film Festival, the other entry being his documentary Dong in the Horizons section. YesAsia.com

Zhang Ke Jia - Shijie aka The World (2004)

"Jia Zhang Ke's The World continues along the same path as Platform and Unknown Pleasures, but it's livelier. This gorgeous, profoundly melancholy distillation of contemporary China's precarious global position is his most accessible film to date. From the stunning opening tracking shot, in which Tao (Zhao Tao) glides through the backstage of the eponymous amusement park, loudly asking for a Band-Aid, Jia cannily conflates the magical and the prosaic. The World may end with a whimper, but it certainly starts with a bang. That opening immediately establishes a strong sense of community, but by the end of the film, we learn that among the working class in contemporary Beijing, the bonds of friendship and romance are ephemeral by necessity. People arrive because they have to, like the desperate men who follow Taisheng (Chen Taisheng) from the country looking for work, and leave when they can. As Tao makes clear, noting of a passing plane that she's never met anyone who's flown anywhere, even with a chintzy miniature replica of the globe at their disposal, the prospects of ever really going anywhere are slim. Tao and her co-workers take solace in colorful (if monotonous) performances, and in the strange but undeniable beauty of the park itself. Fantasies of flight and adventure are reserved for the animated sequences that Jia uses to highlight the frequent text messages his characters send each other, as though through this fleeting interconnectedness with each other -- and through a technology that binds them to the "real" world they never see -- these people find a space to dream. Jia ends his beautifully shot, heartbreaking film on an odd note, which does nothing to dissipate the film's haunting spell." -- Josh Ralske

One of the richest films of the past decade, Jia Zhangke's three-hour epic Platform spans the 1980s, filtering the period through the mutation of the propaganda-performing Fenyang Peasant Culture Group into the equally cheesy All Star Rock and Breakdance Electronic Band. Jia has a strong visual style (based on long fixed-camera ensemble takes) and a powerful set of concerns (the spiritual confusion of contemporary China, caught between the outmoded materialism of the Maoist era and its market-driven successor).
