Bostjan Hladnik - Maskarada aka Masquerade (1971)

An erotic drama about complicated love affairs and blackmailing. Dina, the young wife of elderly manager Gantar meets attractive student Luka and falls in love with him. All her further activity is submitted to one and only goal: to get Luka for herself.

The first, uncensored version was not shown until 1982, in cinema Sloga where only porn movies were played at that time.

Banned for over a decade because of its explicit sexual situations, when this film was released in Yugoslavia in 1983 the explicit scenes had become tame. Other than the notoriety it obtained through censorship, the film has an undistinguished story about the forbidden love affair between the older wife of a sports director and a young athlete.
~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

One of the first modern urban depictions in Slovenia (ex Yugoslavia).

Boštjan Hladnik (30 January 1929 - 30 May 2006) was a Yugoslav/Slovene filmmaker.

Hladnik was born in Kranj. He started with amateur short films after acquiring a projector and a 8mm camera in 1947[1]. From 1949 he studied at the Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana and made a name for himself with several highly acclaimed short films. In 1957, Hladnik moved to Paris to apprentice under French filmmakers such as Claude Chabrol, Philipe de Broca, and Robert Siodmak. Hladnik's early-'60s features, Ples v dežju (Dance in the Rain)[2] (1961) and Peščeni grad/Sand Castle[3] (1962), influenced the course of Yugoslav cinema, through integrating influences from the nouvelle vague into it. Hladnik has an obsession with eroticism. He made many films dealing openly with sex and his Erotikon (1963), with its openly sensual approach to taboo sexual relationships, not only triggered angry protests in the press, but it also led to it being banned in some Yugoslav republics. Western European critics and public however, supported Hladnik enough for him to find foreign backing for his even more provocative feature film on sexuality, Maškarada/Masquerade(1971). Hladnik died in Ljubljana in 2006.

At first glance, this is a rather bizarre Hladniks film.

Plot:
"An engaging journey into the psyche of its main protagonists, this first feature-length film by Yugoslav director Bostjan Hladnik combines symbolism with surreal and expressionist passages to create an evocative drama. At the center of attention is the relationship between the husband and wife in a marriage that has not been happy for awhile. The husband is an artist trying to make a living on his art and the wife is an introspective young actress. He has come to take his wife for granted and as a consequence, is bored with life at home. She knows this and when the chance to have an affair comes her way, she seriously vacillates until finally she decides she has to remain faithful. But the toll of living with a man who does not seem to love her anymore is very great, and even her daydreams cannot assuage her increasing depression." -- Eleanor Mannikka
