In this downbeat drama, which won the Yugoslavian national film award in 1987, no one escapes the sufferings of the previous generation. In the story, Mihalo started out in life as a piano prodigy, but the agony his family went through when he was a youth dried his creative juices up entirely: his father was sentenced to death by a revolutionary court and his mother attempted suicide. Now he is a middle-aged man who teaches music and piano at an adult education center. His bleak existence is briefly uplifted by the unexpected attentions he receives from a lovely young girl who has problems of her own. She is only using a sexual/romantic connection with him to escape her family's ills. Her features and manner remind him of his beloved aristocratic mother. Soon a series of events drives him right over the edge and he winds up committing some horrible crimes of his own, which traumatize the next generation.

Strangler's handling of deadpan, grotesque cruelty and black humour is somewhat similar to the mixture Alex de la Iglesia would perfect in his movies a decade later. The tonal shifts from horror to humour and back again are done well, with only an occasional unevenness, but the film's artificiality (voiceover narration, intertitles, grotesque exaggeration, etc.) may alienate some viewers. Sijan is to be commended for his courage in parodying a genre that has never been too popular with Serbian moviegoers in the first place. Strangler's thematic and stylistic subversiveness was part of the fresh air in Serbian cinema at the time, inspired by the New Wave movement: a wide front of artists and critics based around Belgrade's Student Cultural Center, involved in alternative rock'n'roll, literature, arts and the movies.

The picture was shown at the San Francisco International Film Festival in the mid-'80s, and I was surprised to meet an American poet there who could recite memorable lines from Strangler a full twenty years later (some of them in Serbian!). It is a testament to this film's lasting power which, unfortunately, remains limited only to Serbian filmgoers since an English-dubbed DVD is still nowhere in sight.

Dusan Makavejev - W.R. - Misterije organizma aka W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism (1971)

"W.R." is pioneering sexologist Wilhelm Reich, whose precedent-breaking theories concerning carnal behavior and politics (including the invention of the orgone box) made him persona non grata in most psychoanalytic circles. By all accounts, Reich began his career brilliantly - as the next great successor to Freud and Jung; he then delved into extraordinarily controversial work that divided his critics, leading some to conclude that Reich had experienced a psychotic break from reality. Dusan Makavejev is the equally controversial Yugoslavian director fascinated by Reich's theories. This essay film by Makavejev - his first major work - constitutes a witty, free-form riff on the director's perception of Reichian philosophies as the basis of individual and collective sexual liberation. Makavejev elucidates the Reichian mindset via interviews with the doctor's relatives and colleagues (we even hear from Reich's barber!) Also illustrated is the ongoing conflict between the free-thinking disciples of W.R.'s sociopolitical attitudes and the adherents of sterile Stalinism. Over the course of the picture, Makavejev journeys to the U.S. and interviews such American sexual liberationists as Screw magazine editor Al Goldstein and Betty Dodson. Woven into the factual proceedings is a fictional plotline concerning the romance between Reich adherent Milena and uptight Soviet athlete Vladimir Ilyich. Though the film was never released in Makavejev's native Yugoslavia, WR: Mysteries of the Organism firmly established the iconoclastic filmmaker's international reputation.

Veljko Bulajic - Rat AKA Atomic War Bride (1960)

This Yugoslavian nuclear war movie is almost indescribable. It is madly satirical, almost comic at times, darkly bleak at others and all centered around the exploits of the groom, who somehow remains giddily optimistic in the face of the apocalypse.
The film's plot concerns a couple (John Johnson and Maria Maria ) whose wedding day is memorable for all the wrong reasons: their plans for the wedding are greatly inconvenienced by an impending war with an unnamed enemy that is about to grow into a nuclear one, the curch gets bombed, the bridegroom drafted, and is sentenced to death by firing-squad for sedition. Quite bizzare and with many unforgettable images, the film takes some surprisingly strong (for a production made behind the Iron Curtain) jabs at the ineptitude of government and military authorities.
Rat appeared to be the result of callobaration of the director Veljko Bulajic, in his homeland considered a creator of made to order epic blockbusters, and the Italian script writer Cesare Zavattini, famous for his works in great movies of Italian neorealism like De Sica's Umberto D. and Ladri di biciclette and others. The fact of such cooperation as well as international actor's crew involved may seem as unique as its result.
Never having been shown on official TV channels in its homeland since late 70's this film is now available only as a Something Weird's English-dubbed DVD-release.

Zivojin Pavlovic - Budjenje pacova AKA The Rats Woke Up (1967)

A wonderful film from my favourite Serbian director. It is a bitter film, almost a tragicomedy, about a person whose sense of morality and justice is at odds with the general coruption surrounding him. A dissillusioned communist, paralysed with fear that his support for Stalin during the clash with the USSR will surface and destroy him is on a spiral downfall to the gutters of the supposedly egalitarian society. Of course, the gutter is populated by a host of characters struggling to survive like rats in a dog-eat-dog (or better rat-eat-rat) society. Alcholics, whores, homosexuals, black marketeers bite against each other like starving rats in a barrel, but there is no way any of them is going to be able to claw out of it....

I can not make an impartial judgement, but, for what is worth, I highly recommend this film.

Janko, nicknamed Dzimi, has to leave his temporary job as a seasonal worker, together with his girlfriend, Lilica. Unemployed, he sets off on an uncertain path through life. Despite his efforts, he is unable to find work. Trying to get some money, he steals from some construction workers, but while making his escape, loses Lilica. Dzimi's odyssey has begun. He learns how to sing by becoming the lover of a café singer, and goes on to perform a town fairs, remote military garrisons and small industrial settlements. One day, he meets a young dentist and decides to take part in a song contest in Belgrade. Booed off the stage, he abandons his singing career, and shortly thereafter runs into Lilica, who is making living by picking pockets and blackmailing man who have supposedly made her pregnant. Together, the two of them will devise a fatal money-making scheme.

Aleksandar Petrovic - Bice skoro propast sveta aka It Rains in My Village (1968)

Description: A mentally challenged girl is defended by a young man who takes care of pigs. He gets into a fight with the local saloon keeper promting the man to get the boy drunk and bribe a priest into marrying the boy to the unfortunate girl. A female teacher arrives in town to teach women how to paint. She uses the young boy as a model and then as a toy for her pleasure. The teacher subsequently takes another lover and abandons the young man, claiming that she was unaware of his marriage. The young boy eventually kills his wife, but his father takes the blame for the crime and confesses his sins before he dies in prison. As a conclusion to this sad movie, the townspeople punish the young boy for what he has done.

Bostjan Hladnik - Maskarada aka Masquerade (1971)

An erotic drama about complicated love affairs and blackmailing. Dina, the young wife of elderly manager Gantar meets attractive student Luka and falls in love with him. All her further activity is submitted to one and only goal: to get Luka for herself.



The first, uncensored version was not shown until 1982, in cinema Sloga where only porn movies were played at that time.



Banned for over a decade because of its explicit sexual situations, when this film was released in Yugoslavia in 1983 the explicit scenes had become tame. Other than the notoriety it obtained through censorship, the film has an undistinguished story about the forbidden love affair between the older wife of a sports director and a young athlete.
