Luigi Comencini - A cavallo della tigre AKA On the Tiger's Back (1961)

This well-acted though conventional comedy-drama by director Luigi Comencini features comic Nino Manfredi in the title role of Giacinto, a father and husband who has been driven to steal in order to survive. His ineptitude lands him in jail where he meets up with slightly more hardened criminals, like Tagliabue (Mario Aldorf), a killer, and Il Sorcio (Raymond Bussieres), an experienced thief. Giacinto is anxious to escape and get back to his family but Tagliabue and the thief also want out as soon as possible. Luigi Comencini - Tutti A Casa AKA Everybody Go Home (1960)

Plot Summary
In this war drama, a band of Italian soldiers, elated to hear that the war is finally over, promptly desert and head for home. Only two soldiers remain loyal to the army and they promptly begin heading back to the main forces. En route they are enticed by partisan soldiers who want the two to join them. Later they are joined by more soldiers. One of them is arrested by the Fascists for concealing an American paratrooper. When the two finally return, the Germans force them to work on a road gang. Mauro Bolognini, Luigi Comencini, Dino Risi, Franco Rossi - Le bambole aka The Dolls (1965)

Italians were always fond of episodic comedies, and this falls right into the heydays of this genre, the 1960s. For its time it was regarded quite juicy, both in the subject matter (love, wooing, seduction, etc.) and its visual realisation; Ms. Lollobrigida even got into some trouble with the authorities over her sexy dress. Clearly, times have changed - just three or four years after it was made nobody would have raised an eyebrow. The film 'feels' a bit like "Sex in the City (1998)" transferred into a 1960s mediterranean environment.

Luigi Comencini - Le Avventure di Pinocchio AKA The Adventures of Pinocchio (1972)

This is the movie adaption of the Italian tv mini-series from 1972.

A strict adhesion to the Collodi's text. The poor man Geppetto makes a wooden puppet which he names Pinocchio. During the night, a fairy changes the puppet into a real boy, providing he'll be a good and obedient son. But Pinocchio is thirsty for freedom and explorations...

It's simply a masterpiece to collect. The best Pinocchio movie adaptation ever made. A strict adhesion to the Collodi's text and several genial inventions like Franchi and Ingrassia as "Il Gatto e la Volpe" or Vittorio De Sica as "il Giudice" or the Gherardi's costumes and the unforgettable soundtrack. The original tuscan speech, unfortunately available on Italian version only I suppose, enhances the philological value of the film. By the Comencini's Pinocchio the Italian TV production, at beginning of 70's, reached probably its quality top, rarely confirmed later. Forgot Benigni and his "colossal-flop", manufactured for US market! Only Comencini and Suso Cecchi D'Amico, uo to now, have been really able to adapt the Collodi's tale for a movie.
