Aleksandar Manic - Knjiga rekorda Sutke AKA The Shutka Book Of Records [+Extras] (2005)

Quote:

Known as the alleged world capital of the gypsy or Romany peoples, Shutka, Macedonia thrives on one goal: to be the champion of everything known to humankind. This "anthropological documentary comedy" looks at how people crave to be the best at what they do: no matter if that is hunting down vampires, collecting obsolete Turkish music on audio tapes, training geese to fight, or exterminating evil Genies. Winner of numerous awards world-wide and in its native country, this film is a wonderful examination of people, their quirks, and the wild and zany world within contemporary Serbia/Montenegro. Highly recommended for both entertainment and anthropological interest.

Zdravko Sotra - Ivkova slava (2005)

http://d.imagehost.org/0121/Ivkova-slava.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: "Ivkova Slava" was featured at the recent Festival of New Serbian Film, in Toronto. It was eagerly anticipated, as memories of "Zona Zamfirova" are still fresh here. As with Zona, director Sotra takes us back to times past with colour and exacting detail: the sets, the costumes, the use of regional dialect, the feeling for a time when Serbia was reemerging from centuries of Ottoman subjugation, and notably the accurate portrayals of the ancient customs of the 'slava', or 'patron saint's day feast'.

In Southern Serbia, there are long standing traditions of hospitality. There is also a long standing tradition of going to emotional extremes, as we see with Ivko's three best friends (four, if you count "what's-his-name" the uninvited Shakespeare-quoting stranger). Reacting to a perceived slight from their host, they set out to publicly embarrass him, and majorly overstay their welcome at Ivko's saint's day, leading to all sorts of mishaps, frustrations, and comic moments. I can say that the actors who portrayed Kurjak, Smuk and Kalcha very effectively got under my skin.... they brought to mind an old Serbian proverb that says, "Both fish and guests stink after they've been sitting around for three days" (in the original, "I gost i riba posle tri dana smrde"). Poor Ivko just can't get a break.

An excellent cast was selected, especially for the lead roles. The musical score was disappointing, relying on somewhat modern sounds for both incidental music and one spotlight number, "Insomnia" ("Nesanica"). The musical heritage of that region is so intoxicatingly rich, there was plenty to choose from that would have kept the mood captivating and authentic.

Srdjan Koljevic - Sivi kamion crvene boje AKA Red Colored Grey Truck (2004)

http://h.imagehost.org/0624/sivi_kamion.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

The Red Colored Grey Truck (Sivi kamion crvene boje) directed by a Sarajevo-born Belgrader — Srdjan Koljevic, a film which recently won the Hessen Film Award for the best German film in 2004 in Frankfurt.

The ones who have already seen it in Serbia and Montenegro could say the following: It is easy for foreigners to have a good laugh while watching The Red Colored Grey Truck, the work of a debutant director, but quite an experienced screenwriter, Srdjan Koljevic (as a writer he had two films at the Berlin Film Festival). Because, foreigners never manage to understand who was who in the civil wars in ex-Yugoslavia, which is partly what this film is also about. 'Partly' because the start of inter-ethnic conflicts, which spread throughout Yugoslavia in the 1990s, is a wisely chosen mosaic-type framework for an unexpected, but humorous romance between a Bosnian Serb, color-blind and a passionate stealer of Mercedes-Benz trucks, and a young Belgrade girl rocker, circumstances of which happened to bring them together on the highway leading to the Italian border.

Thus, we have quite a firmly established 95-minute road-film, whose story is set mostly in the driver's cab, but with the whole thing never for a moment being either cramped, or boring or non-dynamic. The role of the Belgrade rocker, the 'perky' Suzana, with an affinity for 'grass', was given to Slovenian actress Aleksandra Balmazovic. She played it bravely, with absolutely no accent to the very end. The fact that, at the beginning and in the first part of the film, her Suzana does not behave like a typical Belgrade girl, is not Balmazovic's fault. This is a problem of Koljevic's, the screenwriter, born in Sarajevo and a newcomer to Belgrade, problem detected not only in this latest film story. Fortunately, as the film develops and as the full seriousness of the situation starts falling into place like pieces of a mosaic and the drama grows outside the truck, and as the rocker's relationship with color-blind Ratko becomes deeper, Aleksandra Balmazovic is increasingly relaxed and more convincing in her acting.

She, undoubtedly, found strong support in her partner, Belgrade actor Srdjan Zika Todorovic, who is so brilliant that he could have easily carried the whole film by himself. The role of Ratko, a simple, kind-hearted Bosnian, a non-malevolent thief who does not see colors, so the world around him seems better and nicer, was, we are convinced, written for him. It is unforgettable.

In The Red Colored Grey Truck, where only the landscapes of the former country are appealing, its inhabitants verge on physical deformity, but, fortunately, even the most negative among them is very likeable. Koljevic, the screenwriter, also offers a series of well-motivated miniature characters, while Koljevic, the director, has chosen the actors impeccably. For instance, Bogdan Diklic in the role of a monk with a Kalashnikov, Dragan Bjelogrlic in the role of a war profiteer.

This film, imbued with the emotional sounds of the accordion, also boasts the contribution of cinematographer Goran Volarevic, costume designer Nebojsa Lipanovic, and editor Marko Glusac who maintains the dynamics. The author has dedicated The Red Colored Grey Truck to all those who see things differently. And such are, fortunately, numerous. Perhaps at some new festival as well.

Srdjan Dragojevic - Lepa sela lepo gore AKA Pretty Village, Pretty Flame (1996)

http://shahlaz.persiangig.com/image/Pretty.Village.Pretty.Flame.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Quote:

The plot, inspired by real life events that took place in the opening stages of the Bosnian War, tells a story about small group of Bosnian Serb soldiers trapped in a tunnel by a Bosnian Muslim force (it is based on an article written by Vanja Bulić). Through flashbacks that describe the pre-war lives of each trapped soldier, the film describes life in former Yugoslavia and tries to give an answer (though, from Serbian point of view) as to why former neighbours and friends "turned on each other".

The film won accolades for superb direction, excellent acting and brutally realistic portrayal of the war in former Yugoslavia. It was also the first Serbian film to show the Serbian side of the conflict involved in atrocities and ethnic cleansing - the title of the film is an ironic comment on the protagonists' activities in a Bosnian Muslim village.

Marina Abramovic & Ulay - Relation Work (1976 - 1979)

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii51/mediaburn/Picture1-25.png

Marina Abramović (Serbian Cyrillic: Марина Абрамовић; born 30 November 1946, in Belgrade, PR Serbia, FPR Yugoslavia) is a New York-based Serbian and Yugoslavian performance artist who began her career in the early 1970s. Active for over three decades, she has recently begun to describe herself as the “grandmother of performance art".

Abramović's work explores the relationship between performer and audience, the limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind.

In 1976, after moving to Amsterdam, Abramović met the West German performance artist Uwe Laysiepen, who went by the single name Ulay. They were both born on the same day.

When Abramović and Ulay began their collaboration, the main concepts they explored were the ego and artistic identity. This was the beginning of a decade of influential collaborative work. Each performer was interested in the traditions of their cultural heritages and the individual’s desire for ritual. Consequently, they decided to form a collective being called “the other”, and spoke of themselves as parts of a “two-headed body”. They dressed and behaved like twins, and created a relationship of complete trust. As they defined this phantom identity, their individual identities became less accessible. In an analysis of phantom artistic identities, Charles Green has noted that this allowed a deeper understanding of the artist as performer, for it revealed a way of “having the artistic self made available for self-scrutiny.”

While some critics have explored the idea of a hermaphroditic state of being as a feminist statement, Abramović herself denies considering this as a conscious concept. Her body studies, she insists, have always been concerned primarily with the body as the unit of an individual, a tendency she traces to her parents' military pasts. Rather than concern themselves with gender ideologies, Abramović/Ulay explored extreme states of consciousness and their relationship to architectural space. They devised a series of works in which their bodies created additional spaces for audience interaction. In "Relation in Space" (1976) they ran around the room - two bodies like two planets, mixing male and female energy into a third component called “that self.” "Relation in Movement" had the pair drive their car inside of a museum for 365 laps; a black liquid oozed from the car, forming a kind of sculpture, each lap representing a year. (After 365 laps they entered the New Millennium.)

In discussing this phase of her performance history, Abramović has said: “The main problem in this relationship was what to do with the two artists’ egos. I had to find out how to put my ego down, as did he, to create something like a hermaphroditic state of being that we called the death self.”

To create this “Death self,” the two performers devised a piece in which they connected their mouths and took in each other’s exhaled breaths until they had used up all of the available oxygen. Seventeen minutes after the beginning of the performance they both fell to the floor unconscious, their lungs having filled with carbon dioxide. This personal piece explored the idea of an individual's ability to absorb the life of another person, exchanging and destroying it.

In Imponderabilia (1977, reenacted in 2010) two performers, both completely nude, stand in a doorway. The public must squeeze between them in order to pass.

In 1988, after several years of tense relations, Abramović and Ulay decided to make a spiritual journey which would end their relationship. Each of them walked the Great Wall of China, starting from the two opposite ends and meeting in the middle. As Abramović described it: “That walk became a complete personal drama. Ulay started from the Gobi desert and I from the Yellow Sea. After each of us walked 2500 km, we met in the middle and said good-bye.”

Abramović conceived this walk in a dream, and it provided what she thought was an appropriate, romantic ending to a relationship full of mysticism, energy and attraction. She later described the process: “We needed a certain form of ending, after this huge distance walking towards each other. It is very human. It is in a way more dramatic, more like a film ending … Because in the end you are really alone, whatever you do.”

Abramović reported that during her walk she was reinterpreting her connection to the physical world and to nature. She felt that the metals in the ground influenced her mood and state of being; she also pondered the Chinese myths in which the great wall has been described as a “dragon of energy.”
